From film experiment to television landmark

Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film Stargate was designed as the opening chapter of a planned trilogy. Emmerich and regular collaborator Dean Devlin built the story around mythology, military science fiction and a mysterious ring-shaped gateway. The film performed strongly at the box office, although its melodramatic, familiar alien-invasion story divided critics. The proposed film sequels never arrived, as MGM pursued television projects instead.

That decision led to Stargate SG-1 in 1997. Running for 10 seasons, the series developed the film’s central idea through a dependable action-adventure format, sending its characters to new worlds while gradually expanding the mythology.

What is Stargate SG-1 about?

The original film begins in Giza, where archaeologists uncover a large, hieroglyph-covered ring. A US military programme eventually learns that the device can create wormholes, enabling near-instant travel to a distant planet.

Linguist Daniel Jackson, played by James Spader, joins Colonel Jack O’Neil, played by Kurt Russell, on an expedition through the gateway. Their mission takes them to the desert world of Abydos, where they confront a dangerous alien ruler. The events of that journey establish the foundation for the television series.

SG-1 begins one year later, with Richard Dean Anderson playing Colonel Jack O’Neill and Michael Shanks taking over the role of Daniel Jackson. They work alongside a team operating from Stargate Command, a military base dedicated to exploring the network of gates.

The team gives the series its staying power

The television versions of O’Neill and Jackson are recognisable descendants of their film counterparts, but the long-running format gives both men room to change. Kurt Russell’s O’Neil is notably cynical, whereas Anderson’s O’Neill often uses understated humour to cut through danger and tension.

The wider team is just as important. Air Force officer Samantha Carter, played by Amanda Tapping, brings technical expertise and determination, while Teal’c, played by Christopher Judge, is a fiercely loyal genetically modified human. Their contrasting personalities help carry episodes even when the pacing or worldbuilding becomes uneven.

A flexible science-fiction sandbox

The show’s mythology expands in several directions. SG-1 encounters the snake-like Goa’uld, investigates the legacy of humanity’s predecessors known as the Ancients, and explores distant parts of the galaxy through the Stargate network.

The devices are more than simple plot devices. Stories involve time travel, alternate timelines and parallel realities, sometimes placing familiar characters in situations where their survival is uncertain. That freedom can produce wonderfully imaginative episodes, although it also occasionally tips the series into camp. Its sincerity and inventive spirit remain central to its appeal.

Beyond SG-1

The Atlantis crew find themselves in a tense situation in Stargate Atlantis

The success of SG-1 supported further television spin-offs. Stargate Atlantis premiered in 2004 as a sequel series launched during the seventh season of SG-1. It leaned into a playful, trope-rich style and explored the more exuberant side of science-fiction adventure.

In 2009, Stargate Universe took the franchise in a darker and more mature direction. Its stories placed greater emphasis on philosophical questions and intellectual dilemmas. The franchise benefited from a committed audience, particularly while SG-1 and Atlantis were both airing on the Syfy Channel.

Amazon MGM greenlit a revival of Stargate in the previous year, creating the possibility of a new version shaped for the science-fiction television landscape of the 2020s. Whatever happens next, SG-1 demonstrated that accessible, pulpy adventure could support elaborate worlds and memorable character arcs.
