Star Wars: Unlimited is changing quickly, and the competitive scene is currently showing a preference for aggressive leaders and villain-focused strategies. Cad Bane and Boba Fett were among the prominent choices at the 2026 Galactic Championship in Las Vegas, but one powerful villain has not received the same attention.
That card is The Stranger, also known as Qimir, the masked antagonist from The Acolyte. Designer John Leo believes the community has moved on from the character too quickly, despite the unusual gameplay opportunities offered by The Stranger – No Survivors.

Why The Stranger stands out
The Acolyte premiered on Disney Plus in 2024, but the series was not renewed for a second season. Star Wars: Unlimited gives characters from across the franchise another opportunity to make an impact, with The Stranger appearing as a Legendary card in the game’s seventh set, A Lawless Time.
Leo identified The Stranger when asked which card the wider player base was overlooking. The card was designed by Joe O’Neill, Leo’s design partner for that set. Leo has described its creation as an unusually inspired design process, including O’Neill’s story that he came up with the concept in the shower.
The card creates a rare situation in which players actually want an opposing unit to strike first. That reversal can produce explosive combat turns, especially when Ambush and the right leader are involved.
A risky card with explosive pay-offs
The Stranger is a Vigilance, Cunning and Villainy unit with apparently modest starting statistics: 1 power and 7 HP. Its Grit keyword changes the equation. Every point of damage it takes grants The Stranger +1 power and +1 HP, making it increasingly dangerous as an opponent tries to remove it.
Ambush allows a unit to ready and attack an enemy immediately after entering play. The Stranger adds another twist by allowing the defending enemy unit to attack first. If that unit damages him, his Grit boosts his power and health before he retaliates, creating opportunities for efficient trades and potentially devastating two-for-one plays.
The design also reflects The Stranger’s role in The Acolyte: a dangerous fighter who becomes more threatening when several opponents close in. With the right leader, base, events and upgrades, the card can pressure enemy units and contribute significant damage against bases.
Is The Stranger really being overlooked?
Leo’s assessment is surprising given the card’s strength, but its market value suggests that some players already recognise its potential. The Stranger was selling for almost $20 on TCGPlayer at the time of the report, which is hardly the price of a completely forgotten card.
The next test will arrive with Homeworlds, the ninth set of Star Wars: Unlimited, scheduled to debut on October 9. A new metagame could make The Stranger more attractive to casual and competitive players alike—or leave him as a powerful option waiting for the right shell.
