Star Wars Is Expanding the Meaning of Jedi

Spoilers for The Ninth Jedi follow.

For much of Star Wars history, becoming a Jedi has been associated with a strong connection to the Force, disciplined training and commitment to the light side. The Ninth Jedi challenges that familiar definition by suggesting that a person’s character may matter more than their natural abilities.

The Ninth Jedi’s broader Jedi Order

Set in a distant future where both the Jedi and Sith have largely faded into legend, The Ninth Jedi follows Lah Kara, a determined Padawan trained by Margrave Juro. Kara travels with allies including Homen, Ethan and the sharp-tongued droid Granny while searching for her father, Lah Zhima.

The group is also working to resist General Nawaam, whose authoritarian army terrorises communities across the galaxy. At the same time, Kara and Juro are seeking people who could help form a renewed Jedi Order.

The series presents an unexpectedly inclusive idea of what that Order can be. Its members are not all powerful Force users. Instead, the decisive quality is their willingness to defend innocent people and stand against evil.

Lightsabers without great Force powers

The finale makes this idea especially clear. Kwana and Tafflah of Bibin admit that their connection to the Force is weak, while Bee-Toh appears to have no connection at all. Bee-Toh is also a former Jedi hunter.

Although Tafflah is not shown fighting, Kwana and Bee-Toh depend on their physical training and skill with a lightsaber rather than Force abilities. All three nevertheless choose to carry lightsabers and join Kara’s new Order.

That decision may seem at odds with earlier Star Wars lore. The Phantom Menace established that Anakin Skywalker’s extraordinary potential was linked to his unusually high midi-chlorian count. If Kwana, Tafflah and Bee-Toh cannot readily access the Force, their place among the Jedi naturally raises questions.

Sabine Wren provides an important precedent

This is not the first story to separate Jedi training from exceptional Force talent. In Ahsoka, Sabine Wren studies under Ahsoka Tano, although their relationship breaks down before Sabine completes her training.

Sabine is a very different student from Ezra Bridger, who can reach the Force with relative ease. Her own difficulty is explored in the Rebels episode “Trials of the Darksaber”, where Kanan Jarrus explains that everyone is connected to the Force to some degree, but Sabine appears to have a barrier preventing her from accessing it. Her Mandalorian background is presented as one possible reason.

Huyang is even more direct about Sabine’s limitations, telling her that her aptitude for the Force falls below that of every Padawan he has known across the centuries. Even so, Sabine later makes progress. By the end of the first season of Ahsoka, she uses the Force to push Ezra to safety on Peridea.

There are earlier hints of that potential, too. Sabine can sense Ezra in the World Between Worlds and is an unusually capable blaster user, even before she begins accessing the Force more clearly.

Is Force sensitivity required to be a Jedi?

Sabine’s journey helps explain the choice made in The Ninth Jedi. Kara may be more naturally gifted, but Kwana, Tafflah and Bee-Toh demonstrate the courage and self-sacrifice expected of Jedi. Their instinct to protect others is treated as more important than their ability to manipulate the Force.

That interpretation also fits a long-standing idea attached to the Force: it is not necessarily an exclusive power reserved for a tiny group of people. George Lucas once compared learning to use the Force with yoga, arguing that anyone could do it if they were willing to devote the time.

A meaningful shift for Star Wars canon

The Ninth Jedi does not erase the importance of Force ability, training or tradition. Instead, it broadens the definition of a Jedi. The series argues that wielding the Force can be part of the journey without being the sole qualification for joining the Order.

That gives the Jedi a more accessible future: one where courage, compassion and a commitment to protecting the vulnerable can place someone on the path, even when their connection to the Force is faint or difficult to reach.
