Star Fox on Switch 2 has received an unexpected update, giving its battle mode extra locations, new gameplay features and four-player split-screen support. The patch is not a full expansion, but it highlights another Nintendo 64 classic remade for Switch 2 in 2026 alongside The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

What Version 1.2.0 adds

Version 1.2.0 went live last night. It adds Katina, Sector X and Venom to battle mode, expanding the arenas available for multiplayer matches.

Battle mode can now support four players on one Switch 2 through split-screen play. Multiplayer lobbies also remain active when the host leaves, while new items can appear during battles to add more variety to each match.

A clearer signal for campaign players

The update also improves the regular campaign by making boss damage feedback much easier to read. Players should now receive a more obvious onscreen indication when their attacks connect with a vulnerable part of a boss.

Can the update lift Star Fox sales?

Fox McCloud appeared in the Mario Galaxy Movie earlier this year, which passed one billion dollars at the box office. Even so, the Star Fox remake did not sell strongly. The additional content could help it attract attention during the holiday season, although competing directly with Ocarina of Time may be difficult if both games share store shelves without a substantial discount.

The digital edition currently costs $50 and includes a story mode that lasts less than two hours. Shoppers comparing retro releases can also consult RETROCADE’s Arcade Machine Buying Guide when planning a broader classic-gaming setup.

What may come next for Star Fox?

Current rumours suggest another Star Fox game could be in development. If that proves accurate, Fox McCloud and the rest of the team may eventually return in a more substantial adventure.

For now, fans can revisit Star Fox Adventures on GameCube, which joined Switch Online over the summer. The new update gives the Switch 2 remake more multiplayer options, while the possibility of a new entry remains unconfirmed.
