Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surrendered the top spot at the domestic box office, but its record-setting run is far from finished.
The Tom Holland-led Marvel film had remained the highest-grossing release in the United States and Canada since arriving on 31 July. That streak ended over the weekend when Practical Magic 2, starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, opened with $30 million. Brand New Day placed second for the weekend with $8.4 million.
A domestic record is within reach
Despite the weekend defeat, the superhero sequel has moved beyond $935 million domestically. It is now less than $2 million short of overtaking Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which earned $936.6 million across the US and Canada.
The film was already breaking records before its official release. Preview screenings generated $72 million, helping it reach a domestic opening of $360 million. That launch edged past Avengers: Endgame, which began with $357 million in the same market.
Brand New Day becomes a global phenomenon
Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed $1 billion worldwide soon after opening. It then became the second-fastest film to reach $2 billion globally, with Avengers: Endgame still holding the faster mark.
Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man film has now collected more than $2.4 billion worldwide. That total makes it the third-highest-grossing movie ever, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, the latter of which is preparing for another cinema release.
The performance has also lifted Holland to the position of highest-grossing lead actor of all time. The ranking largely reflects the enormous combined returns of major Marvel films, while Zoe Saldana’s position is similarly boosted by her appearances in the Avatar films.
