The Marvel Cinematic Universe once dominated cinema conversation. In 2016, Phase Three had begun with Captain America: Civil War, setting the franchise on its long route to Avengers: Endgame. Superhero films filled theatres, post-credit theories spread across social media and the MCU became unavoidable, whether audiences embraced it or not.
A decade later, the cultural temperature has changed. Marvel remains active, as its major San Diego Comic-Con presentation demonstrated, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day has attracted strong praise. However, the anticipation surrounding Avengers: Doomsday is nowhere near the phenomenon that preceded Avengers: Infinity War. Its December release now looks like a defining test for the franchise.
Marvel’s Comic-Con strategy was familiar. A large cast promoted Doomsday, while the presentation confirmed that Ghost Rider, Black Panther 3 and Nova are planned after Secret Wars. A surprise Ryan Reynolds appearance also signalled that Deadpool remains part of the wider picture.
Those announcements generated interest, but not the overwhelming online reaction that similar news might have produced ten years ago. Social media responses included plenty of scepticism, and Disney Plus subscribers did not appear especially motivated to revisit MCU films after the panel. The conversation has fallen from a roar to something much quieter.
Why Avengers: Doomsday carries so much pressure
Audience hesitation is understandable. The Multiverse Saga has struggled with uneven films, abandoned storylines and a late change to its central villain. That makes it difficult to invest in a narrative that can feel improvised rather than carefully assembled.
The earlier MCU rewarded viewers for following its interconnected stories. Individual films appeared to build towards a satisfying team-up, with seemingly separate pieces eventually forming a larger picture. The current saga has made that investment harder because some pieces feel uncertain or incomplete. Even the future of announced projects such as Ghost Rider is difficult to assess, while Blade has faced an especially unsettled outlook.
That makes Avengers: Doomsday Marvel’s most important test so far. The film must demonstrate that a compelling conclusion can still emerge after a disjointed build-up. If it fails to address years of audience frustration, viewers may be less willing to commit to another long-running “trust the process” storyline, and Disney may be less inclined to pursue one.
Spider-Man offers Marvel a possible reset
There is still genuine goodwill towards the MCU when the filmmaking connects with audiences. Early enthusiasm for Spider-Man: Brand New Day suggests that people have not abandoned superhero cinema; they are simply more selective about which films deserve their time.
The response also points to a straightforward solution. Marvel may not need another elaborate promise or an even larger announcement. A coherent, well-made film could be enough to bring audiences back. For Doomsday, that means the spectacle must be supported by clear storytelling and a payoff that makes the long wait feel worthwhile.
