Zoe Saldaña leads Special Ops: Lioness, a hard-edged CIA thriller built around covert missions, female operatives and the personal cost of modern warfare. For viewers looking beyond familiar military-action franchises, it offers a tense, character-focused alternative.
The series follows the Lioness Team, a secret CIA programme that sends undercover women into dangerous environments to infiltrate terrorist organisations. Saldaña plays Joe McNamara, a senior CIA officer balancing operational command with the responsibilities of being a wife and mother.

A brutal spy drama with serious stakes
Created by Taylor Sheridan, the Academy Award-nominated writer and director behind Yellowstone and Tulsa King, Lioness takes a different route from his better-known projects. Its focus is covert warfare, where difficult choices and graphic violence sit alongside layered character work.
The opening episode establishes the show’s uncompromising approach. An undercover operative is discovered and captured by enemy forces. When a rescue is judged impossible, Joe authorises a missile strike that kills the hostile group and the trapped operative. It is an immediate demonstration of the series’ moral complexity and its willingness to show the consequences of war rather than soften them.
Each season introduces a new operation. The first centres on an attempt to enter the inner circle of a powerful terrorist’s daughter in Kuwait. The second shifts to the Mexican cartel. The third follows two connected threats: the abduction of a senior CIA operative at home and the war in Ukraine overseas. The third season concluded in September.

Why the cast makes Lioness work
Saldaña gives Joe the authority expected of a senior intelligence officer, but the performance is not limited to tactical confidence. As Joe’s health, safety and family life come under pressure, her controlled exterior begins to reveal the emotional price of the work.
The ensemble includes Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman and Jill Wagner, while Laysla De Oliveira plays Cruz, one of the operatives drawn into the programme’s dangerous assignments. Wagner and De Oliveira were praised by members of the military, who reportedly found their performances raw and convincing. In an interview, Wagner described that response as a major honour and said the military audience’s approval suggested the production had captured something authentic.

Saldaña’s commitment becomes even more important in the third season, which places Joe in increasingly precarious situations and removes much of the protection around the character. In an interview with People magazine, she discussed preparing months ahead of production and giving the role her full physical and emotional effort.
A compact, intense binge
The series has also found a substantial streaming audience. By the time of publication, Lioness had spent more than 200 days among Paramount+’s 10 most-watched shows in the United States. It had also ranked higher than MobLand and South Park on the service’s chart.
Its first season’s eight-episode structure helps keep the story moving, while the rotating missions give the broader premise room to expand. The result is a violent, female-led spy drama that combines military procedure with questions about loyalty, necessity and sacrifice.

Is Special Ops: Lioness worth watching?
For viewers who enjoy high-pressure action, morally complicated intelligence stories and commanding performances, Lioness is an easy recommendation. Saldaña anchors the series, but the supporting cast and shifting international missions give it enough depth to stand apart from a straightforward action vehicle.
Paramount+ has not renewed the show for a fourth season at the time of publication. Until that decision arrives, the completed three-season run makes Lioness a strong choice for a focused binge.
