Fortnite’s upcoming Gaming Legends season is assembling a remarkably broad cast of video-game icons, and the latest trailer confirms that Sonic the Hedgehog is joining the battle royale. The speedster is also shown carrying a firearm, alongside several other familiar characters.
The new season continues the game’s long-running habit of crossing over with characters from animation, celebrity culture and unexpected fictional worlds. This time, the spotlight is firmly on games. Joker from Persona 5 was confirmed earlier, while the wider promotion has been building speculation about which other icons will appear.
The trailer offers glimpses of characters and cosmetic items connected to Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat, Tetris and Pac-Man. Epic’s own dormant cartoon mascot, Jazz Jackrabbit, also appears. Sonic is seen speeding through Green Hill Zone with Jonesy, the game’s default character.
Sonic’s appearance was not entirely unexpected. His official social channels had already promoted a tie-in comic featuring Shadow and Knuckles. The trailer now provides a clearer look at how the blue hedgehog has been adapted for the shooter.
As with several less human-shaped Fortnite guests, Sonic has been given a deliberately human-proportioned body. His arms and legs are elongated, while his oversized head retains the exaggerated, parade-balloon appearance seen in the promotion.
Shadow previously became associated with the unusual sight of a Sonic character using a gun in a game. The new update extends that idea: Sonic and Knuckles are both shown with fully rendered firearms, and the trailer also includes Doctor Eggman. That combination naturally raises the question of whether the weapons will ultimately be pointed at Eggman when the update launches on 20 August.
A major crossover for game history fans
With characters spanning platformers, fighting games, puzzle games and arcade icons, the season could be one of Fortnite’s most concentrated celebrations of gaming culture.
