The advice immediately creates its own punchline. While Snoopy keeps his attention on the sky, Woodstock slips over the edge of the doghouse and disappears from view. Snoopy looks down, reassesses the situation and concedes: “I was wrong…that’s not the secret to life…”
Why the gag remains so effective
The joke works because it combines two sides of Peanuts. Snoopy’s first thought is hopeful and uplifting, but reality interrupts before he can enjoy it. His optimism is not erased; it is simply corrected by an inconvenient result.
That balance was central to the strip across its 50-year run. Its world included rejection, disappointment, wet weather, empty supper dishes and unsuccessful novels, but Snoopy rarely stayed defeated for long. He responded to setbacks by moving on, adapting and embracing whatever happened next.
