Slow Horses season 6 keeps its promise to the novels

Slow Horses head writer Gaby Chiappe says the series will not kill a character simply for shock value — unless Mick Herron’s novels do so first.

Since its Apple TV debut in 2022, Slow Horses has built a reputation for sharp spy stories, dry humour and tightly paced six-episode seasons. The series adapts Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, following MI5 agents whose careers have stalled after professional failures.

Apple has delivered six seasons in four years, an unusually quick schedule for a major streaming drama. That pace made Will Smith’s departure after season 5 particularly significant. Chiappe, a committed fan of both the books and the television series, became head writer for season 6.

Chiappe described the promotion as both an exciting opportunity and a daunting responsibility. Her familiarity with the source material also meant she understood how much the show’s audience values the novels’ larger story.

Season 6 combines two Slough House novels

Unlike the earlier seasons, which each drew primarily from one book, season 6 brings together Herron’s sixth novel, Joe Country, and his seventh, Slough House. The decision was made before Chiappe joined the production.

Joe Country presented practical filming difficulties. Much of the story takes place over a short period during a blizzard in Wales, creating a demanding production built around snow and a single weather condition. The novel could not simply be skipped, however, because Herron’s mysteries resolve individually while continuing to develop an overarching narrative.

The adaptation therefore gives Slough House the larger structure, while incorporating important material from Joe Country. One major thread involves River Cartwright, played by Jack Lowden, meeting his dangerous mercenary father Frank Harkness, played by Hugo Weaving, at River’s grandfather’s funeral.

Chiappe’s aim was to make the combined material feel like one coherent season rather than two unrelated plots placed together. The result is intended to preserve the strongest elements of both books while creating a complete story arc of its own.

Returning characters and a careful approach to deaths

Season 6 also brings back characters whose futures have been uncertain. Sid Baker, played by Olivia Cooke, returns after being presumed dead following a gunshot wound to the head in season 1. Louisa Guy, portrayed by Rosalind Eleazar, is also back after leaving Slough House at the start of season 5.

Louisa’s departure was not part of the novels; the character was written out because of scheduling conflicts. Chiappe says changes are sometimes necessary, but the series does not casually rewrite the books or kill characters who survive in Herron’s stories.

That approach gives the adaptation room to respond to production realities while maintaining trust with readers and viewers. For fans who follow both versions, the promise is significant: alterations should serve the story rather than exist solely to create surprise.

A yearly pact with viewers

The production’s rapid timetable meant that writing on season 7 began while season 6 was still filming. Co-executive producer Billy Bowring helped coordinate the transition between Chiappe and Ben Vanstone, who is set to become showrunner for season 7.

Chiappe believes the regular release pattern helps viewers stay connected to the series. Although a one-year wait can feel long, longer gaps between seasons can make audiences lose their connection with a show. The production team wants to offer a new season around the same time each year.
