The Triple-i Initiative remains one of the more reliable showcases for independent games, largely because its lineup is difficult to predict. The latest presentation featured 40 games in 45 minutes, combining updates on anticipated projects with a substantial batch of new reveals.

Among the returning titles were The Talos Principle 3 and Pony Island 2: Panda Circus. These six newly announced games stood out for their unusual settings, distinctive visual styles and promising genre ideas. For more gaming news and features, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

Machinarium 2

Amanita Design is following this year’s Phonopolis with Machinarium 2, a sequel to the studio’s cult 2009 puzzle adventure. The story once again centres on a lost robot, while the brief reveal showed more of Amanita Design’s carefully crafted hand-drawn artwork.

Jiaohun

Developer 12AM Blackout offered only a glimpse of Jiaohun, but its debut trailer made a strong impression. This psychological horror game appears to be a surreal journey through hell, with an unsettling tone that may appeal to players who wanted something even stranger from Silent Hill f.

Militsioner

Stealth takes an especially intimidating form in Militsioner. Instead of simply slipping past ordinary guards, players must avoid a gigantic police officer looming over an entire city. Published by Critical Reflex, the team behind Mouthwashing, the game combines nightmare imagery with the potential for a compelling immersive-sim experience.

Lazare’s Sacrifice

Lazare’s Sacrifice may initially resemble a more illustrated take on Gwent, the card game from The Witcher 3. That comparison is fitting: the project was developed in collaboration with Gwent creator Damien Monnier. Its central concept is different, however, retelling the French Revolution through a card-battling game.

Prison of Husks

Prison of Husks imagines a Soulslike built with the visual language of a PlayStation 2-era game. Developer Glass Head Dolls uses fuzzy, low-poly environments and character models to create a hazy, dreamlike interpretation of a FromSoftware-style adventure.

Gods With Badges

Strange Scaffold is returning to turn-based tactics with Gods With Badges, following last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown. The new strategy game explores questions surrounding policing and the potential misuse of authority and responsibility.

Why these games are worth tracking

This selection covers a broad range of ideas: hand-drawn puzzle adventure, psychological horror, stealth, card strategy, retro-styled action and turn-based tactics. They are also a useful reminder that independent games continue to experiment with presentation and premise in ways that larger showcases do not always prioritise.

If these projects have you thinking about building a dedicated gaming setup, RETROCADE’s Arcade Machine Buying Guide can help you compare options. Compact rooms may suit bartop arcades, while hands-on builders can explore DIY arcade kits and relevant arcade parts.
