Sekiro: No Defeat, the anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, will begin streaming internationally in January 2027. The adaptation will arrive as an eight-episode series rather than the 107-minute film shown in Japanese cinemas.

From theatrical film to weekly series
The streaming announcement comes as the anime completes an extended theatrical run in Japan. The cinema release presented an edited version of the story as a feature film, while the upcoming series will include additional scenes and cuts.

The January 2027 date was announced by Crunchyroll. New episodes are scheduled to arrive weekly, giving viewers a longer version of the adaptation and a different experience from the theatrical edit.

Why the format changed
Producer Tetsushi Suzuki explained on the anime’s official website that the project began as an eight-episode television series. During production, the team wanted audiences to experience its visuals and sound on a cinema screen, so an edited film was released first as a preview.
“The TV series, which includes scenes and cuts not included in the film, will be released weekly,” Suzuki said in machine-translated comments. He apologised for not making the episodic format clear earlier and said the series would offer a different appeal while remaining based on the film’s story.

Staff and story
Kenichi Kutsuna directs Sekiro: No Defeat for anime studio Qzil.la. Shunsuke Fukui is the assistant director, Takahiro Kishida handles character design, and Shuta Hasunuma composed the music.
The story is set in a fractured Japan divided among nations at war. Ashina, a land tied to sacred earth and ancient mysteries, faces a new threat two decades after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina reclaimed the region through a brutal coup.
Isshin’s grandson Genichiro turns to forbidden powers in an effort to protect his homeland. His hopes rest with a kidnapped boy known as the Divine Heir and the boy’s quiet shinobi protector, Sekiro. Together, lord and retainer seek to restore balance to a nation on the brink.

What to expect in January
Sekiro: No Defeat begins streaming in January 2027, with one new episode released each week. The production team also revealed a new poster alongside the streaming news.
While the 107-minute theatrical version offers a compact introduction, the eight-episode release is the fuller version of the project. Fans who have already seen the film can expect material not included in that cinema edit.
