Sega Amusements International has reached a major milestone, marking 40 years in the coin-op amusement business. While Sega itself is more than six decades old, this anniversary relates specifically to the company’s European arcade operation and the independent international business that followed.

From European coin-op distributor to global operator
The business began on 31 March 1983 as Sega’s European coin-op company. Its early role was to bring Sega-developed arcade games to markets including the United Kingdom, France, Spain and Italy.
Over the decades, the organisation changed structure and name several times. Early associations included Ruffler & Deith and Deith Leisure, while the Sega Amusements Europe name emerged during the 1990s. Sega Amusements France and Sega Amusements Spain also operated briefly under that structure.
In the 2010s, Play It Amusements—formerly Sega Amusements USA—came under Sega Amusements Europe. This wider arrangement led to the Sega Amusements International name in 2015, reflecting a broader presence in the amusement market.
The company became wholly independent on 25 March 2021, when CEO Paul Williams completed a management buyout. Today, the business is represented at major trade events such as IAAPA and Amusement Expo under the Sega Amusements International name.
A catalogue spanning racing, licensed games and redemption
Although the company has distributed major Japanese Sega arcade releases—including House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn—its portfolio also includes games developed internally or through closely associated development partners.
Examples include Transformers: Shadows Rising, Daytona Championship USA and Mission: Impossible Arcade. The wider catalogue has also featured Ford Racing, GRID, Transformers, Plants vs. Zombies, Jumanji and Bop It! Arcade.
Beyond video games, the company has supplied redemption attractions such as Power Roll. Partnerships with manufacturers and distributors including ICE, Komuse, Wahlap and, more recently, 501 Entertainment have helped expand the range available to arcade and family-entertainment operators.

More than arcade cabinets
Sega Amusements International has built dedicated divisions around the needs of amusement venues. Sega Total Solutions was established in 2007 to provide spare parts, redemption tickets, change machines, ticket eaters and cashless payment systems.
Sega Prize International was also formed in 2007, specialising in licensed plush and other prizes designed for amusement locations. Sega Amusements Operations followed in the early 2010s and has grown quickly by delivering attractions intended to bring visitors in, keep them engaged and encourage repeat play.
That wider operational model is a reminder that successful venues depend on more than the game itself. Australian operators and home collectors looking at maintenance requirements can find relevant equipment through arcade parts and professional support through arcade repairs.
Record sales and a message of thanks
At Amusement Expo, the company reported that the fiscal quarter ending around its anniversary was its strongest ever, with sales reaching a new record. That result added another positive note to the 40-year celebration.
CEO Paul Williams thanked customers, partners and suppliers around the world for their continued trust, saying their support had been central to the company’s progress. He also recognised the staff whose expertise, commitment and enthusiasm had supported the business over four decades.
The company’s anniversary highlights how a regional Sega arcade operation evolved through multiple reorganisations into an independent international amusement business, while retaining a connection to some of the industry’s best-known game brands.
