Magic: The Gathering is keeping its print-to-demand approach for selected Secret Lair releases after a trial designed to stop popular products selling out almost instantly.

The test arrived with the Hatsune Miku Commander deck. Instead of limiting sales to available stock, Secret Lair opened orders for 24 hours and committed to fulfilling every purchase made during that period.

Secret Lair leader Matthew Hodgins described the experiment as having gone “incredibly well” in an official post on the Magic: The Gathering blog. He said the system achieved its central aim: anyone who ordered within the window would receive a deck.

Why the Hatsune Miku deck mattered

The policy was introduced after strong criticism of the Goblin Storm and Dandân Secret Lair drops, both of which disappeared almost immediately. The 24-hour window is intended to help players secure releases that combine significant demand with ready-to-play appeal.

The Miku deck therefore provides a useful model for future limited releases. Customers get more time to place an order, while the company gains information about demand without relying solely on a race to checkout.

Backorders remain the biggest weakness

The change has not removed every problem. Hodgins identified queue throttling and new North American shipping arrangements as areas still being refined. Backorder fulfilment is a more noticeable concern for customers.

Secret Lair has a finite supply of pre-printed decks ready for immediate dispatch. Once that supply is exhausted, additional orders from the 24-hour window move to backorder. Those purchases will still be fulfilled, but customers may wait months for delivery.

Hodgins said the backorder issue will take time to fix, while acknowledging that the experience should improve.

For Australian collectors, the arrangement also highlights the importance of checking delivery details and expected timing before committing to a highly sought-after release. What comes next for Secret Lair

Secret Lair plans to continue testing the 24-hour order format. The next trial is scheduled to arrive within weeks with Secret Lair Commander Deck: Odds and Ends. More information is expected to be shared closer to that release.

The company is also considering a dedicated Secret Lair storefront. Such a site could make purchasing more straightforward and give customers clearer information about ordering and fulfilment. The Odds and Ends release will provide another opportunity to collect data for future 24-hour drops and inform the possible storefront’s design.
