RyzaChat: Your Midsummer Dream Story with AI Ryza is a new mobile “AI chat RPG” from SpiralAI and Koei Tecmo’s Gust studio. Set in the Atelier Ryza universe, the iOS and Android game is built around conversations with an AI version of series protagonist Ryza.

The concept is likely to divide players. While the project promises a version of the Atelier experience shaped by natural-language interaction, it also places a highly personalised character chatbot at the centre of the game.

How RyzaChat works

The opening scenario asks players to send messages that help Ryza build a boat capable of leaving Kurken Island. Completing that task unlocks a world map, after which the game presents quests generated by its AI system.

Those quests are intended to cover familiar Atelier activities, including exploration, gathering materials, combat, synthesis and construction. The game also includes the full cast from the original Atelier Ryza trilogy.

A separate Chat Mode lets players speak directly with Ryza. Her reactions include different facial expressions and gestures, allowing conversations to influence more than just the text displayed on screen.

Human-made artwork, AI-driven dialogue

Koei Tecmo has partnered with SpiralAI, the Japanese technology company behind the Geppetto2 large language model. The collaboration was presented as a way to deliver Japanese intellectual property internationally while managing the risks associated with generative AI.

SpiralAI says RyzaChat was developed with safeguards for responsible AI use. The company has stated that the game will not use AI-generated images or video. Its illustrations, character portraits, promotional videos and key art were made by human artists.

The synthetic voice was created using recordings from Ryza voice actor Yuri Nohuchi. The chatbot’s dialogue was trained using scripts and reference materials from the Atelier Ryza games.

SpiralAI has also promised royalty-based revenue sharing with contributors, including illustrators, voice actors and intellectual-property holders. These measures address concerns about creative credit and compensation, although they do not settle every question surrounding the format.

The concern over AI companions

AI companion services have prompted reports of people spending many hours communicating with virtual partners and developing emotional dependence on them. Broader discussion of AI-generated romantic partners has made the risks of highly personalised chatbots harder to ignore.

That context matters here because the Atelier Ryza series has long drawn attention to the sexualised presentation of its lead character. Some fans even use the nickname “Atelier Thighza”. A game designed for extended, direct conversations with Ryza could therefore encourage an unusually intense relationship between player and character.

Can an AI storyteller deliver a good RPG?

There is also a straightforward design concern: many games centred on AI chat have struggled to provide satisfying stories. A language model can reproduce information from its reference material, but that is not the same as giving players the structure, pacing and purpose of a story written by a human team.

Without strong direction, AI-generated quests may feel repetitive or disconnected rather than like meaningful adventures. Other major publishers, including Ubisoft, have tested related technology with underwhelming results.

RyzaChat will be an interesting test of whether conversational AI can complement a role-playing game without replacing the authored storytelling that gives an RPG its shape.
