Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a proposed new beginning for its long-running MMORPG. The developer, which also operates Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, said the project would not proceed after listening to community feedback.
“It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” Mod Ryan said in a video announcing the decision.
What RuneScape Reignited promised
Jagex revealed RuneScape Reignited earlier this month at Runefest 2026, the community event centred on the RuneScape series. The proposal was described as a refresh of the 25-year-old MMO.
Players would have started again with a completely new economy, while world-first achievements were reset. Jagex also planned dedicated worlds for Reignited accounts. Those players would still share a world with established characters, allowing them to chat, create guilds and use player housing together. However, trading and teaming up for boss fights would not have been available between the two groups.
Why the project was abandoned
The proposal appealed to some lapsed players and veterans who had grown tired of the existing game. Others argued that it would direct attention towards newcomers at the expense of long-time vets. For those players, fixing persistent problems in the current game seemed more valuable for attracting and retaining the audience than resetting its progress.
Jagex now appears to have accepted that criticism. “We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views,” Mod Ryan said. “Our goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.”
The cancellation is another example of how strongly established online communities can shape the direction of a major game. For more coverage of gaming and industry developments, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog, or explore the arcade industry video collection.
