Roblox expands its platform at RDC 2026

Roblox used its 12th annual Roblox Developers Conference (RDC), a private creator event held in the Bay Area, to announce a broad set of changes to how games are built, discovered and monetised.

The San Mateo-based company is targeting wider access to user-created games, alongside new development tools and financial services for creators. The announcements arrive as Roblox continues to face scrutiny over child safety, including an child-safety undertaking in Australia. Age-restricted accounts introduced globally in June have not resolved every concern.

Roblox remains hugely popular internationally. The company says players spent 29 billion hours on the platform during the last quarter, across more than 180 countries. For broader arcade and gaming news, keep an eye on RETROCADE’s editorial coverage.

More ways to play Roblox games

The first group of announcements focuses on reducing the distance between finding a Roblox experience and playing it. The changes also give developers more flexibility over where and how their projects run.

Immersive content on Roblox

  • Creators will be able to release their games as stand-alone apps for mobile devices, PCs and consoles, while Roblox provides the underlying technology and services.
  • By the end of 2026, players will be able to enter a game directly through a browser. A shared link will take users from discovery straight into play.
  • Developers will be able to combine online and offline modes within a single game, supporting single-player campaigns and sessions that do not require a network connection.
  • The engine is gaining stronger support for 2D games, including an orthographic camera, animated image containers and direct sprite-sheet importing.

That broader range of formats could interest creators accustomed to traditional cabinets, although Roblox has not announced dedicated arcade hardware. Readers planning a physical setup can compare options in RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide.

AI-assisted development tools

Roblox is also expanding its creator toolkit, with artificial intelligence playing a larger role in the process of building game worlds.

  • Build, the Roblox app feature that lets users create and publish a game by entering prompts, is extending its public alpha to Serbia and Singapore.
  • Build will gain an asset library, desktop access and more iterative control, giving creators greater influence over the results.
  • Scene Generator is scheduled to arrive later in 2026 for both Build and Studio. Studio users will receive more detailed control over the generated scenes.
  • Roblox plans to expand NPC capabilities with two new behaviours by the end of the year, including NPCs that can playtest games.

New payment tools for creators

Roblox Wallet is designed as a financial account for creator businesses. It will allow eligible creators to earn in real currency, receive automatic payments each business day, transfer money to other Roblox accounts or move funds to an external account. Creator Hub will also provide more detailed earnings analytics.

The payment provider behind Roblox Wallet is Airwallex. Its service is not currently available in five US states: New York, Nevada, Hawaii, Indiana and Wisconsin. Airwallex’s state availability can be reviewed through its licensing information. Roblox has said that, for some US customers, Airwallex works with trusted US banks to provide payment services.

Roblox Card is planned for rollout in 2027. Linked to a creator’s Roblox Wallet, it will function like a debit card, allowing available funds to be spent on real-world expenses wherever major card networks are accepted. Roblox says it will not be a credit card and will not provide a loan or line of credit.

What the RDC announcements mean

RDC 2026 positions Roblox as more than a single destination for user-made games. Stand-alone releases, browser access, offline play, 2D development and AI-assisted tools could give creators more routes to reach players, while Wallet and Card are aimed at making creator income easier to manage.

For Australian players and developers, the announcements are significant but incomplete. The event addressed access, production and monetisation; it did not provide a new answer to the child-safety concerns surrounding the platform. How these tools perform in practice will depend on their eventual rollout and the safeguards applied alongside them.
