Rideshare Stimulator finally discloses its use of generative AI

Rideshare Stimulator developer Saber Interactive has added a detailed generative AI disclosure to the game’s Steam listing, following a week of criticism about how the technology was used during development.

The controversy began after the game’s July announcement, which did not mention generative AI. On 11 August, developer Stella Sacco discussed the issue on Bluesky, claiming that Saber had replaced her with ChatGPT partway through development.

What Saber said about the dispute

Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch later confirmed that AI had been used, saying the studio had been waiting for a “finalized feature set” before adding a Steam disclosure. His response also included insulting comments about Sacco, including that, in hindsight, he would have been happy to replace her with AI.

The studio subsequently gave a more measured explanation to This Week In Video Games and Game File. Saber denied that its writers had been replaced by generative AI, while confirming that the technology had a role in the game.

What the Steam disclosure covers

The game’s updated Steam page says the main campaign’s story, characters and dialogue were written by human writers. It also identifies several areas where AI tools were used:

  • AI-assisted voice generation.
  • Some localisation work.
  • AI-generated passenger missions and localised dialogue in the optional Free Ride mode.
  • A mixture of human-made and AI-generated music across the radio stations.

Free Ride is separate from the main campaign, and players can skip it if they want an experience limited to the human-written narrative. Radio stations containing AI-generated music are labelled in the game.

The full wording is available on the game’s Steam page. For readers interested in the broader arcade and simulation space, RETROCADE’s racing simulators category shows how driving-focused interactive experiences can also be built around dedicated hardware.

Sacco receives an apology

Sacco later reported on Bluesky that Saber had revoked her access to a development build of Rideshare Stimulator on Steam. She also said Karch had privately apologised for his comments.

Why the disclosure matters

The updated listing clarifies that AI is not used in exactly the same way across every part of the game. It distinguishes the human-written campaign from optional AI-generated content, while also identifying generated voices, localisation and music.

For the games industry, the dispute highlights the importance of explaining AI use before release rather than waiting until questions arise. It also raises continuing concerns about how studios introduce these tools without obscuring the work of human developers.

That transparency matters across interactive entertainment, including home arcade projects. Anyone comparing a traditional cabinet with a modern driving experience can use RETROCADE’s arcade machine buying guide, browse the wider arcade machine range, or explore more arcade news and features.
