Resident Evil is marking its 30th anniversary in 2026, but Capcom’s long-running survival-horror series may already be moving towards a major narrative endpoint. The franchise remains active, with Resident Evil Requiem continuing its story while remakes steadily revisit earlier chapters.

In an interview with Yahoo Japan, executive producer Jun Takeuchi said Requiem completes Capcom’s original ten-year plan for the series. That plan began during development of the Resident Evil 2 remake.

Looking further ahead, Takeuchi suggested that the franchise’s conclusion could arrive within the next 10 years. He also indicated that fans should expect multiple games before that point. The comment does not confirm that Capcom will stop making Resident Evil games altogether, but it does suggest that the current overarching storyline has a defined destination.

What could Resident Evil’s conclusion mean?

The wording leaves plenty of room for interpretation. A conclusion could resolve the characters and storylines currently driving the series rather than end the brand itself. Another possibility is a new beginning or a full reboot.

Resident Evil 7 already demonstrated how Capcom could refresh the formula without completely discarding its history. It functioned as a soft reboot while retaining links to earlier games. Requiem similarly looks back across the franchise, including the return of familiar character Leon Kennedy.

Why the Code: Veronica remake matters

Takeuchi also discussed Capcom’s approach to remaking the older games. He said there is a reason the remakes have been released in their particular sequence, suggesting that playing through them may reveal a larger meaning.

The planned Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake is especially notable because it follows the Resident Evil 4 remake, even though the original releases arrived in the opposite order. Takeuchi indicated that the newer version will adjust elements of the original to better fit the series’ current canon.

That places Code Veronica in a potentially important position. Rather than treating it as a side story, Capcom appears to be using the remake as a significant part of the main narrative.

Oswell Spencer returns to the centre of the story

Takeuchi identified one of the series’ current concerns as revealing the true nature of Spencer. Oswell Spencer helped establish Umbrella Corporation and has served as one of the franchise’s central antagonists, despite having died before the events of Resident Evil 5.

Requiem revisited Spencer through flashbacks and challenged long-held assumptions about him. Takeuchi’s comments suggest those revelations are connected to a wider plan, with the Code Veronica remake expected to continue that thread.

For Australian players following the franchise across consoles and PC, the key takeaway is that Capcom appears to be building towards a planned story milestone rather than quietly winding down the series. The company still has several titles to deliver, but the next decade may define the final shape of this particular era of Resident Evil.
