Pokémon has relied on turn-based battles for roughly three decades, but that long-running formula may no longer define every mainline game. Last year’s Legends: Z-A introduced real-time mechanics, asking players to rethink strategies built around decades of familiar rules.
That change divided the fanbase, while Pokémon Champions appears designed to protect the established competitive format. Comments from its development team suggest the simulator will preserve classic turn-based battles while giving future releases more freedom to experiment.
The discussion comes from a studio video featuring designer Shigeki Morimoto and Champions co-director Kazumasa Iwao. They explained that the project was created partly to give long-time players a permanent home for the battle system they know, rather than forcing them to follow every future change.

The developers said the rules used for competitive Pokémon battles may gradually change as the series moves forward. They recognised that many players have enjoyed the traditional format since Red and Green, then Gold and Silver, and did not want those fans simply told to abandon it.
At the same time, the team wants the franchise to keep exploring new ideas. Its solution was to create one game that carries the existing system forward and allows players to continue using it indefinitely. That goal became a central reason for developing Pokémon Champions.
The comments do not explain what future battle systems might look like. Legends: Z-A’s real-time approach could provide a template, although some players didn’t like that shift when the game launched on Switch and Switch 2 last year.
Internet leaks have suggested that next year’s Winds and Waves may retain the traditional turn-based structure. Those reports are not confirmation, but they point to a possible split: Champions for established competitive play, alongside mainline experiments that can change how battles work.
