Pokémon TCG Pocket has followed its disappointing, if charming, June update with a much stronger July release. The new Ruler of the Skies booster pack brings Mega Rayquaza to the digital card game, alongside powerful cards and useful quality-of-life improvements for fans of the Hoenn region.
Its biggest achievement, however, is reminding us why Generation 3 introduced one of the finest groups of legendary Pokémon in the series. Mewtwo may have something to say about that, but Hoenn’s roster is difficult to beat.
The Weather Trio returns
Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire launched the Game Boy Advance era in 2002 with a memorable collection of creatures and a stronger focus on Pokémon mythology. The games centred on Kyogre and Groudon, ancient titans whose rivalry threatened to turn the already water-heavy Hoenn region into a climate catastrophe.
Kyogre and Groudon stood out immediately, with prehistoric forms and bold colours that looked striking on the games’ cover art. Rayquaza ultimately stole the spotlight: the long green dragon was arguably the coolest legendary design the series had produced at that point. Its later Mega Evolution made the design even more imposing and became a major force in competitive play.
Ruler of the Skies gives all three members of the Weather Trio suitably impressive cards. Mega Rayquaza ex is the headline chase card, with a striking portal variant offering another beautiful version to collect. Groudon receives a stronger showing than its Mega Shine card, pictured in a dramatic, fire-breathing pose. Kyogre may be the standout, though, thanks to a full-art card that uses rich blue tones to capture the legendary’s graceful presence.
Generation 3’s strongest designs
The visual appeal of these cards reflects the quality of Hoenn’s original character designs. The Game Boy Advance allowed the development team to present large Pokémon with more detailed sprite artwork, and the legendary creatures benefited enormously.
The unusual Regi trio explored a distinctive rock, ice and steel concept. Deoxys brought an eerie science-fiction edge with its narrow, DNA-like limbs, while Jirachi combined bright yellow details with colours that complemented the Weather Trio. Even Latios and Latias, arguably the less memorable members of the group, had playful designs that remained easy to recognise.
Hoenn’s legendary stories were just as ambitious as their appearances. Kyogre was an enormous ocean-making killer whale. Rayquaza was a god-like dragon that had lived in the ozone layer for millions of years. Deoxys began as an alien virus transformed by a laser. The blend of natural forces, ancient mythology and science-fiction horror gave Generation 3 a particularly bold identity.
A strong reason to revisit TCG Pocket
Players who have not opened Pokémon TCG Pocket recently have a good reason to return. Collecting the Weather Trio alone would be worthwhile, but Ruler of the Skies also features other standout Hoenn Pokémon, including Mega Sharpedo, Metagross and Mawile.
