Pokémon Pokopia reaches five million sales
Pokémon Pokopia has sold more than five million copies in just four months, making it one of the biggest games on Nintendo Switch 2. The figure comes from a company press release.
Nintendo has sold 23.68 million Switch 2 consoles, so Pokémon Pokopia is owned by roughly 21% of the platform’s player base. Put another way, about one in every five Switch 2 owners has the cosy Pokémon life sim in their library.
A strong start for a different kind of Pokémon game
The result is notable because Pokémon Pokopia takes the series in an unusual direction. Rather than centring on traditional battles and collecting, it focuses on building a community, creating a home and developing relationships between Pokémon.
Its mix of life simulation and construction has been compared to Animal Crossing combined with Dragon Quest Builders 2, the 2018 Koei Tecmo Omega Force success. The concept was a gamble for The Pokémon Company, but its reception suggests the quieter approach has connected with players.
Critical and player reactions have also been strong. The game has an average critic score of 89 and a user score of 8.7 on Metacritic. OpenCritic reports that 97% of critics recommend it, alongside a player rating of 100.
Those scores help explain the game’s rapid sales. It has been described as a charming life sim, while the five-million milestone shows that its appeal extends well beyond a niche audience.
Pokémon Pokopia is already Switch 2’s second-biggest seller
With more than five million units sold, Pokémon Pokopia is currently the second-best-selling game on Nintendo Switch 2. It sits behind Mario Kart World, which has sold 15 million copies.
There is an important qualification: Mario Kart World was the only game bundled with the console when Switch 2 launched. That makes the comparison less straightforward, although Pokémon Pokopia‘s position remains impressive for a game released without that bundle advantage.

New content expands the cosy adventure
The first downloadable content expansion has added the Bubbly Basin region, an underwater area populated largely by Water-type Pokémon. Manaphy gives the player the ability to dive and breathe beneath the surface, opening up a new way to explore the game world.
A second DLC release is planned for later in 2026. It will add clothing and accessories for Pokémon, giving players further ways to customise the communities they build.
Why the sales milestone matters
Pokémon Pokopia shows how a familiar licence can reach players with a slower, more creative format. Its focus on construction, community development and Pokémon relationships sets it apart from the mainline formula, while the strong review scores indicate that the change in direction has been well received.
