Pokémon Pokopia’s free 2.0 update is now available alongside the $35 Bubbly Basin expansion. The update adds underwater building, new customisation options and a long list of quality-of-life improvements for every player, whether or not they purchase the expansion pass.

For players who want to review Nintendo’s complete documentation, the full patch notes cover every addition, adjustment and fix.

The update is also notable for addressing one of the life sim’s most amusing launch-era frustrations: Pokémon reacting dramatically whenever an object is moved inside their habitat.

Pokémon are less upset when furniture moves

Pokopia’s habitats are built from combinations of props, grass patches and water placed within the game’s different biomes. There is no single required layout, but the relevant components must be present before a Pokémon recognises the area as home.

Before version 2.0, moving even one item a short distance could make the game treat the habitat as destroyed. The Pokémon might become sad and leave, forcing the player to rebuild the arrangement and invite the resident back. The update makes this process more forgiving:

  • A Pokémon will return if its habitat is rebuilt within a certain area, even after the original habitat has been destroyed.
  • A Pokémon made sad by removed furniture will recognise replacement furniture more quickly.

That change should make redecorating less disruptive, even if it removes one of the game’s funniest sources of community comedy. It is also a useful reminder that careful object placement is central to Pokopia’s town-building systems, much like planning a cabinet layout when choosing an arcade machine for a games room.

  • Painting with paint balloons now provides a clearer view of the target item.
  • The Dowsing Machine can find more treasure on Dream Islands.

  • Surf and Waterfall activation conditions have been improved.
  • Leafage can turn farm soil back into a normal soil block.
  • Strength can now be used underwater.
  • An All tab has been added to both the Pokédex and Habitat Dex.
  • The game now makes it clearer that buildings can be remodelled when items such as the Ditto Flag are attached to roofs or walls.
  • Pokémon not assigned to the Build role can help with cooking during construction.
  • Treasures in Sparkling Skylands no longer appear through Dowsing Machine use where breaking terrain would make them fall.
  • Messages about insufficient materials for copying items with the 3D Printer have been improved.

  • Hide-and-sneak can be cancelled partway through.
  • Startup event notifications now appear only during the relevant remaining-day periods.

  • Tidal Bell and Clear Bell can be triggered with laser sensors and switches.
  • Camping chair and sleeping bag sound effects have been adjusted.
  • Some rendering processes have been improved for better performance.

These construction and customisation changes should appeal to players who enjoy designing spaces and experimenting with layouts. For hands-on arcade projects, RETROCADE’s DIY arcade kits and arcade parts offer a similarly practical approach to building and refining a games setup.
