Pokémon Gold and Silver remake rumours have gained momentum after a Nintendo social media post used imagery and wording closely associated with the Johto games. There is still no confirmed announcement, however.
Why Johto remains such a popular destination
The second generation is widely regarded as a high point for the series. Pokémon Gold and Silver introduced features that became long-term staples, including a day-and-night cycle, Steel- and Dark-type Pokémon, breeding and several other additions.
The games also delivered a memorable post-game surprise: after defeating the Elite Four, players could return to Kanto and explore the region from the original adventure.
What Nintendo’s post showed
The post featured a screenshot from Pokémon Pokopia and a caption containing the words “silver” and “gold”. The image recreates a scene from the second-generation games in which the player’s rival looks through the window of Professor Elm’s laboratory.
That combination was enough to revive speculation about a future Johto project. Fans have already discussed several possible explanations, ranging from new Pokopia content to ports or full remakes of the classic games.
Could Pokopia’s next region be based on Johto?
One theory is that the third Pokopia expansion, expected in 2027, could introduce a region inspired by a Johto town. Every Pokopia area released so far has drawn from towns in Kanto, the setting of the first generation, so a move east would represent a notable change.
Another possibility is a new pair of Pokémon Let’s Go games set in Johto. Kanto was revisited in Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee!, while Pokopia shares a similar visual style and reuses assets first seen in those titles. Eight years have passed since the two Kanto games launched.
Johto also offers plenty of potential mascot choices, including Togepi, Elekid, Magby, Phanpy, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Mareep and Shuckle.
Ports and remakes are also being discussed
A simpler explanation would be the arrival of Johto games on Nintendo Switch. The 2004 Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen remakes of Red and Blue reached the console in February. That has prompted speculation that the 2009 Nintendo DS remakes, Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver, might follow.
There is also the prospect of completely modernised remakes of the Johto region, potentially following the approach used for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. Those 2021 fourth-generation remakes received a less enthusiastic response, so any new project would likely be met with both excitement and caution.
A Pokopia explanation involving Ho-Oh and Lugia
A theory shared by Reddit user Deep-Reserve271 suggests the caption could point to Ho-Oh and Lugia becoming available to live in a player’s Pokopia town.
The legendary pair currently appear occasionally in the sky above the game world, where they leave behind either a Rainbow Feather or a Silver Feather before departing. Unlike the legendary bird trio from the first generation, they cannot currently be recruited in the same manner.
It may simply be a social media reference
There is an equally plausible explanation: Nintendo’s post may not contain a hidden announcement at all. A follow-up post promoted Pokopia and encouraged players to “recreate memorable moments”, which could mean the Gold and Silver wording was only intended as a nostalgic reference.
For now, the Johto remake rumours remain unconfirmed. Fans hoping to revisit the region will need to wait for official information rather than treating the tease as evidence of a specific game.
