Overwatch is stepping beyond its free-to-play hero-shooter format for Questwatch, a live tabletop role-playing adventure planned for Blizzard’s BlizzCon.
Blizzard has previously crossed over with brands including Burger King, Fortnite and Hello Kitty, mostly through themed skins and limited events. Questwatch takes the idea in a different direction by placing Overwatch’s science-fiction cast inside a fantasy tabletop adventure.
What is Overwatch Questwatch?
Questwatch is described as the first Overwatch tabletop role-playing game adventure. It will be performed live at BlizzCon on 13 September, with more details scheduled for the convention’s opening ceremony on 12 September.
Matthew Mercer will act as game master, guiding four other heroes through a new adventure in Overland. Mercer is widely known for his work as Dungeon Master on Critical Role campaigns, while Overwatch players may also recognise him as the voice of Cassidy, the game’s cowboy gunslinger.
Could the adventure use Daggerheart?
Blizzard has not confirmed which tabletop system will power Questwatch, nor has it revealed which heroes will join Mercer. However, Daggerheart appears to be a likely possibility. In the promotional image released by Blizzard, Cassidy is shown holding two d12 dice, a type prominently associated with Daggerheart.
The choice of Cassidy as the central figure may seem unexpected. Characters such as Lucio, Sombra or D.Va might appear more naturally suited to a role-playing hobby, but Mercer’s experience with collaborative fantasy storytelling makes him a logical guide for the event.
Is an Overwatch tabletop game coming?
Questwatch is not an announced official collaboration between Overwatch and Critical Role. A larger partnership remains speculation, although Critical Role’s expanding audience and fantasy-focused campaigns could make its characters, themes or designs a natural match for Blizzard’s hero-shooter.
A full Overwatch tabletop role-playing game is also possible in the longer term. Other major properties, including Star Wars and Avatar: The Last Airbender, have attracted attention from Wizards of the Coast, while Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is set to receive an official Dungeons & Dragons book in November.
Until the BlizzCon presentation, the key questions remain unanswered: which rules system will be used, which heroes will take part, and whether the story will connect with current events or changes in Overwatch.
