Overwatch is making a substantial change to its seasonal reward system, with Season 4 introducing a more flexible Battle Pass, greater cosmetic choice and fewer reasons to worry about missing limited-time content.
A less linear Battle Pass
The revamped system divides the existing 80 tiers into shorter tracks of eight to 10 levels. Players can tackle these tracks in any order, with each one ending in an Epic or Legendary skin. Blizzard says the pass still contains the same number of tiers and should take about as long to finish, but the new structure gives players more influence over which rewards they unlock first.
The changes are part of a broader effort to make Overwatch more appealing to its player base. Blizzard has released eight new heroes in recent months, while Season 4 launches with D.Mon, the game’s latest tank hero.
Premium pass additions
Premium Battle Pass owners will also receive access to Tier Hack. This feature lets players exchange one Legendary skin from the pass for a different legacy skin selected from a curated pool.
Another major feature is planned for later in Season 4. The Legacy Battle Pass Unvault system is scheduled to arrive in September, giving players a second chance to earn rewards from selected expired passes.
Expired passes can remain available
Once a player buys an eligible pass, it remains permanently available. Players who already own a qualifying pass will be able to access it through the same system, reducing the pressure to complete every seasonal reward track before it disappears.
There are limits, however. Unvaulted passes will not include their original premium currency, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, or Mythic Hero and Weapon Skins.
Players welcome the change
The prospect of returning cosmetics has prompted a strongly positive reaction from the community. One player celebrated the chance to unlock a Zarya walking emote that had been unavailable for three years, calling the update a “Massive W” in a Reddit user’s comment.
“I’ll finally be able to get that Zarya walking emote that I couldn’t get three years ago. Massive W.”
Another player thanked Marvel Rivals, whose permanent Battle Pass access for purchased passes may have helped influence this direction.
A strong period for Blizzard
The update arrives during a productive period for Overwatch and Blizzard. A leaked internal email reportedly described Blizzard as Xbox’s “top-performing” studio, helped by Overwatch delivering its strongest quarter since 2022.
The game’s faster release schedule appears to be contributing to that performance. Alongside Season 4 and the Battle Pass changes, D.Mon is joining the hero roster as the newest tank.
