Over the Hill is a relaxed off-road exploration game from Funselektor Labs, the studio behind Art of Rally, with assistance from Strelka Games. Its Steam demo is available now ahead of the full Windows PC release on 14 October 2026.

A quieter kind of driving game
Where Forza Horizon 6 surrounds players with cars, events, notifications, rewards and online activity, Over the Hill takes a much simpler approach. You drive a compact 4×4 through scenic wilderness, with exploration and careful navigation taking priority over competition.
The game shares Art of Rally‘s stylised presentation and toy-like versions of classic late-20th-century vehicles. Its unlicensed cars include the Land Rover Defender-inspired Protector, the Toyota Land Cruiser-inspired Roamer and the Mercedes G-Wagon-inspired Sentinel.
This is not a racing game. The focus is on reading the terrain, choosing a route and gradually making your way through the environment. Players who enjoy thoughtful driving and racing simulators may find its slower pace especially appealing.
Exploration across Emerald Lake
The demo centres on Emerald Lake, a Canadian Alpine setting filled with fir trees, lakes, muddy paths and steep mountain terrain. Warm autumn colours, low-poly models, clean textures and hazy lighting give the landscape a distinctive, carefully composed look.
Progress comes from investigating the map rather than chasing lap times. Abandoned crates unlock cosmetic additions for the vehicle, including fenders, lights, roof racks loaded with camping gear or kayaks, spare wheels and shovels.
- Trail challenges
- Scenic viewpoints
- Item recovery missions
- Cabins that provide fast travel
- A demo mission involving a bogged-down Land Rover that must be towed to safety

Terrain, weather and vehicle recovery
The environment can still punish careless driving. Vehicles may become stuck in rivers, peat bogs, mud, rocks or uneven tracks. A winch can sometimes pull the 4×4 towards a nearby tree, but not every situation has an easy escape.
Weather and the time of day also affect each journey. Players have tools for clearing the skies and camping overnight, while changing conditions make familiar trails feel different and can increase the challenge.
Despite those hazards, the demo is designed to remain approachable. Using low gear, slowing down and picking a careful line turns difficult sections into a calm exercise in observation. Fast-travel cabins are useful when recovery is not possible.

Solo wandering or shared exploration
Over the Hill is built primarily as a meditative solo experience, but it also includes online play for up to four people. Its combination of traversal, discovery and cooperative wandering may appeal to players who prefer an exploratory gaming experience over a structured competitive event.
The broader design sits somewhere between relaxed climbing and hiking games, off-road simulation and open-ended environmental exploration. Its main appeal is the chance to stay present in the landscape and find a route without being buried under layers of progression systems.

Release details
Over the Hill launches for Windows PC on 14 October 2026. The demo is available on Steam now. Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions are planned for 2027.
