Oppenheimer finds two free streaming options

Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning historical drama Oppenheimer has returned to Peacock, roughly a year after leaving the service. The three-hour biopic is also available to watch free with advertising on Fandango.

The return is notable because Universal Pictures produced the film, while Peacock is owned by NBCUniversal. Its earlier absence from the company’s streaming platform made the arrangement seem unusual, particularly given the film’s success.

A major box-office success

Released in 2023, Oppenheimer earned approximately $975 million worldwide despite its length and serious subject matter. Its commercial momentum was boosted by the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, created when Nolan’s film and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie opened on the same weekend.

Both films became major hits. Barbie ultimately earned more than $1.4 billion globally, while Oppenheimer established itself as one of the most commercially successful historical biopics ever made.

What is Oppenheimer about?

The film follows J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who helped develop the first nuclear weapons. Its story is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 biography American Prometheus.

Nolan’s film covers Oppenheimer’s university years, his leadership of the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos Laboratory and the post-war security hearings surrounding allegations of communist activity.

Oppenheimer uses one scientist’s career to examine the human and political consequences of creating weapons capable of mass destruction.

Critical praise and Academy Awards

Oppenheimer received strong responses from critics and audiences, recording a 93% critics’ score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

At the 96th Academy Awards, the film received 13 nominations and won seven awards:
