Onimusha: Way of the Sword has delivered a major comeback for Capcom, selling more than one million copies on its first day. It is the first new mainline entry in the historical action series in 20 years.
The strong launch adds to Capcom’s impressive 2026 performance. Resident Evil Requiem has passed eight million copies sold, while the original science-fiction action game Pragmata has reached 2.5 million. Monster Hunter Stories 3 has also joined the company’s successful line-up.
All four games have received broad critical praise, with each recording a Metacritic score of at least 85.
Capcom’s revival strategy is gaining momentum
Capcom’s release schedule remains busy. On 9 October, the publisher will launch the Dark Arisen expansion for Dragon’s Dogma 2, alongside a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
Day-one Nintendo Switch 2 editions for Capcom releases have been another notable part of the company’s strong 2026 run.
In a statement, Capcom said it is also working to bring more dormant series back into its catalogue. The publisher intends to complement major franchises such as Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter by reactivating intellectual properties that have not received new releases recently.
Capcom says it is using its extensive content library to increase the value of its existing properties, alongside releasing major new titles each year.
Mega Man leads the next wave of returns
The next confirmed revival is Mega Man. The retro action-platform series is scheduled to return in 2027 with Dual Override.
That announcement may also renew interest in other long-dormant Capcom properties. Fans have spent even longer waiting for new entries in Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire than they waited for the return of Onimusha, although no new games in either series have been confirmed.
