New previews and trailers have revealed more about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time ahead of its November 5 release on Nintendo Switch 2. A short teaser from Nintendo Japan has also offered the first glimpse of how the remake handles one of the original game’s most memorable encounters: Dark Link.
The footage lasts only a moment, but it shows Dark Link leaping onto Link’s sword during the Water Temple mini-boss battle. That brief animation suggests the remake is preserving one of the fight’s most distinctive details while rebuilding its combat for modern hardware.

Why Dark Link remains such a memorable encounter
Dark Link is distinct from Shadow Link, but both names are sometimes confused. In Ocarina of Time, Dark Link appears in the latter half of the Water Temple, one of the game’s more challenging and puzzling dungeons.
The encounter begins in a misty chamber covered by shallow pools, with a lone tree at its centre. After Link reaches the far side, the exit closes behind metal bars. Turning back reveals a dark figure standing near the tree. As Link approaches, the figure is revealed to be a mirrored version of the Hero of Time and attacks without warning.
For players encountering the battle in 1998, Dark Link could be difficult to read and outmanoeuvre. Uncontrolled sword swings were easily punished, while careful movement and timing were essential. There was also a less conventional option: Deku Nuts could freeze him in place.

A more detailed Dark Link for Switch 2
The remake’s version of Dark Link appears to have more clearly defined visual features, including a Hylian Shield displaying the complete crest. The available footage does not provide a full look at the mini-boss’s redesigned outfit, although its appearance may reflect the Dark Link designs used in more recent Super Smash Bros. games.
The larger question is whether the rebuilt scene can recreate the atmosphere of the Nintendo 64 original. The first game made the encounter effective through restraint: it placed a familiar character in an unexpected setting and turned normal combat expectations against the player. A visually enhanced remake may need to find its own way to deliver that same sense of unease.
Combat could be the remake’s strongest upgrade
The battle itself should benefit from the remake’s streamlined movement and targeting systems. Those changes could make the duel more responsive while preserving the pressure of facing an opponent who mirrors Link’s attacks.
There is also potential for the updated fight to resemble the tense, two-dimensional mirror duels from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The remake’s combat will have to balance that sharper responsiveness with the unusual rhythm that made Dark Link memorable in the first place.
