Nvidia’s upcoming DLSS 5 image-enhancement technology has attracted attention after an experimental build reached modders. Early testing suggested the AI-powered system could sometimes improve visual quality in particular games and situations, but performance appears to be the much bigger story.
Nvidia has now confirmed to PC Gamer that DLSS 5 currently reduces frame rates by 50 to 60 per cent in every game. The reported performance loss also applies to high-end graphics cards.
Upscaling technologies are generally intended to make demanding games appear sharper or run more smoothly than a graphics card could manage through native rendering alone. DLSS 4, for example, could generate three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame and improve the efficiency of ray tracing.
However, modders using the leaked DLSS 5 build reported a substantial performance hit. Nvidia’s comments indicate that the slowdown is not simply a problem with that early version.
A major trade-off for visual enhancement
At a technology demonstration held the previous week, Nvidia reportedly said DLSS 5 was cutting performance by between 50 and 60 per cent across all games. In practical terms, that could mean sacrificing roughly half your frame rate for AI-generated changes to the appearance of in-game characters.
Nvidia’s explanation is that the technology required two RTX 5090 graphics cards to operate at all six months earlier. By that measure, the current result represents significant progress in a short period, although the remaining performance cost is still difficult to overlook.
The official DLSS 5 release is scheduled for 3 September. With that launch only two days away, there is limited time for a dramatic improvement over the performance seen in the current demonstrations. Nvidia may continue refining the system over the following months, but its practical benefits remain uncertain for now.
For PC players weighing new graphics hardware, this is another reminder to consider real-world performance rather than marketing promises.
