Nintendo has scheduled two separate Direct presentations for next week: one covering upcoming games for Switch 2, and another dedicated to The Legend of Zelda during the series’ 40th anniversary year.

When to watch the two Nintendo Directs

The Zelda-focused presentation comes first on 8 September at 7am Pacific Time / 10am Eastern Time. Nintendo says it will run for approximately 30 minutes.

The broader Switch 2 showcase follows on 9 September at 7am Pacific Time / 10am Eastern Time, with an expected runtime of about 45 minutes. Both presentations will stream through Nintendo’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

The announcement appeared in an update on the Nintendo Today app.

What could appear in the Zelda presentation?

Nintendo has not detailed the contents of either broadcast, but the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2 would be an obvious centrepiece for the anniversary presentation.

A first trailer for the forthcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film is another possibility. The movie is scheduled to premiere on 30 April, while public information so far has consisted of a small number of still images, behind-the-scenes material and casting announcements. An anniversary-focused broadcast would provide a suitable opportunity for Nintendo to show a proper teaser.

Fans should probably keep expectations measured for news about the next mainline Zelda game after Tears of the Kingdom. Only three years have passed since that release, and major Link adventures typically take longer to develop. There is precedent for an earlier reveal, however: Breath of the Wild was first teased in 2014, three years after Skyward Sword.

A substantial week for Nintendo news

Giving Zelda its own 30-minute broadcast is a clear way to mark the franchise’s 40th anniversary, particularly after a quieter period for the celebration. Nintendo has often approached major anniversaries with less ceremony than The Pokémon Company, but half an hour still leaves room for several meaningful announcements.
