Netflix unveils first look at Greta Gerwig’s 2027 Narnia film
Barbie and Little Women director Greta Gerwig is bringing C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia to Netflix with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The film is scheduled for a 2027 release in cinemas and on the streaming service, and Netflix has now revealed its first poster.

A trailer is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, giving audiences their first moving preview of the adaptation. The poster follows earlier glimpses of Aslan, the talking lion voiced by Meryl Streep, and Daniel Craig as Andrew Ketterley, the magician named in the story’s title.

When will Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew be released?
The film was originally expected in 2026, but Netflix delayed it in May. Its updated release plan begins with early IMAX screenings on 10 February 2027, followed by a global cinema and IMAX release on 12 February.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will then begin streaming on Netflix on 2 April 2027. Australian viewers should note that the listed dates are global release dates; local session times and cinema availability may vary.

Where the film fits in Narnia’s history
Published in 1955, The Magician’s Nephew was the sixth book released in Lewis’ Narnia series. It is a prequel set 1,000 years before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and explores the creation of Narnia by Aslan.

The story has a distinctive place in the series because it focuses on Narnia’s beginnings rather than the adventures of the Pevensie children. Gerwig has described reading the book as a child and being captivated by the idea of a cosmic lion singing the world into existence. She has also said that its themes of music, magic, hidden worlds and ordinary people caught up in extraordinary adventures stayed with her throughout her life.
A first live-action adaptation
This will be the first live-action film adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has received several earlier adaptations, including a 1967 ITV serial, a 1979 animated film, a BBC series in 1988, and a 2005 live-action production from Walden Media released by Disney and 20th Century.
The BBC and Walden Media versions each continued with adaptations of Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Magician’s Nephew has also appeared in theatre, radio and manga formats. Netflix acquired the rights to C.S. Lewis’ works in 2018.

Cast and creative team
The cast includes Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep, alongside newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell. Gerwig is directing and writing the film.
The production’s fantasy imagery could also appeal to fans planning a themed games room. RETROCADE’s arcade machines and virtual pinball machines offer two different ways to build a home entertainment space, while the arcade machine buying guide covers the practical choices involved.
