Netflix’s Dealies is expected in 2027, bringing Joe Bennett’s offbeat animation to a big-box store and giving his next series a stronger comedy focus.
Joe Bennett’s next animated project will move away from the alien landscapes of Scavengers Reign and the conspiracy-driven premise of Common Side Effects. Instead, Dealies will follow an unusual group of employees working in a big-box shop, while an antique store across the road provides a rival presence.
Bennett discussed the project while speaking about Common Side Effects, which has a second season in development. He indicated that Dealies will draw more heavily on the comedy found in his earlier original short films.
“It’s an episodic comedy series where a bunch of current characters work together in a big box store,” Bennett said, describing the show as more comedy-based than some of his other work.
Steve Hely, Bennett’s collaborator on Common Side Effects, is not involved with Dealies. However, Hely described the new series as character-led and attentive to the strange behaviour found in ordinary life.
“It’s very Joe Bennett in that it’s very character-based. Very observed,” Hely said, highlighting the show’s offbeat people and recognisable real-world setting.
What is Netflix’s Dealies about?
Netflix announced Dealies as an adult animated series created by Bennett and writer Ted Travelstead. The pair are serving as showrunners, writers and executive producers. The project is being produced by Green Street Pictures, the studio co-founded by Bennett.
The official premise centres on a team of eccentric retail workers, including a “savant salesman”, a “gentle gladiator” and a “summoner of the divine”. Their manager is the unlucky person responsible for hiring them. Despite their impressive-sounding abilities, the employees are primarily meant to sell goods and occasionally complete their actual work.
That workplace setup gives Dealies a more familiar backdrop than Bennett’s previous animated projects. Scavengers Reign followed humans stranded on an alien planet, while Common Side Effects explored a conspiracy surrounding a mushroom with potentially world-changing properties.
