Naughty Dog Hints at More The Last of Us Projects

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann says he is not involved in shaping the third season of the live-action The Last of Us series, but the studio is not finished with the wider franchise.

The television adaptation is expected to conclude with its third season rather than continue into a proposed fourth. Kaitlyn Dever is set to return as Abby, although Druckmann says he cannot comment on the season’s progress because he is no longer part of its creative production.

Druckmann Has Stepped Away From Season Three

In an interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann discussed video-game writing and whether his television work has influenced his recent creative projects.

He is currently directing Naughty Dog’s upcoming science-fiction action game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. His focus on that project was a key reason for leaving the television series after its second season.

Druckmann made clear that he did not help establish the third season’s creative direction. Naughty Dog also has no creative role in guiding that season, leaving him unable to provide a personal update on its production.

More Projects Are in Development

Although the studio is separate from the television season’s creative direction, Naughty Dog remains the steward of The Last of Us intellectual property. Druckmann said the end of the television adaptation would not mark the end of the franchise, adding that several projects are in development and that he is looking forward to discussing them when the time is right.

He did not specify whether those projects include a third mainline game, another adaptation or a different creative work set in the post-apocalyptic world. His comments nevertheless leave open the possibility of The Last of Us Part III, following the events of Part II.

What Could Come Next?

For players following Naughty Dog’s next move, the studio’s immediate priority remains Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Any future The Last of Us game or other project has yet to be formally identified.
