Marvelous USA is bringing Naruto Arcade Battle to selected American venues for a limited location test. The card-based arcade game is designed for fans of the Naruto manga and anime.
The game is based on an existing release in China, although it had not been announced for Japan at the time of this test. The tested version has been translated fully into English, and there was an indication that additional venues could potentially take part beyond those initially confirmed.
Marvelous USA has announced the test, while the official instructions explain the basic game flow.
How Naruto Arcade Battle works
- Use tokens or credits to begin a game.
- Throw a kunai at a moving target on screen to earn a Shinobi Plate. Smaller targets award rare Shinobi Plates, so careful aiming matters.
- Build a team using up to four Shinobi Plates. A battle can still begin without a full team of four.
- During combat, move one of your Shinobi Plates to the centre of the screen to attack.
Winning a Button Mashing Battle allows a Shinobi Plate to unleash a special attack. The winner is the player who reduces the opponent’s HP to zero.
The game page describes a format familiar from Japanese arcade card battlers. It differs from US arcade adaptations such as Injustice Arcade and Minecraft Dungeons Arcade, which do not use this same Shinobi Plate-focused structure.
Seven Shinobi Plates were available during the test. Two venues were listed, with one on each side of the United States.
Test locations and dates
- Round1USA, Puente Hills, California: the test was scheduled to begin on October 12, 2023, and run through November 5.
- Kiddleton, Brooklyn, New York: the second test was scheduled for October 19 through November 12, 2023.
What could happen after the test?
A successful trial would raise an important distribution question. Marvelous did not have an established arcade distribution operation in the United States at the time, although the company could pursue one. Another possibility would be a partnership with an established operator or manufacturer such as Raw Thrills, Bandai Namco or Sega Amusements.
IAAPA 2023 could have provided a chance for more concrete information, but the location test itself was the immediate focus.
