A short horror game that stays with you

The horror genre has enjoyed a remarkable run through the 2020s, from major Resident Evil releases and the return of Silent Hill to acclaimed independent games such as Signalis. Yet few have left as lasting an impression as Mouthwashing, a roughly three-hour story set aboard a stranded cargo spaceship.

Originally released in 2024, the game built a devoted following despite launching during a crowded period that included Astro Bot and Silent Hill 2. Positive word of mouth helped it become a closely guarded Steam favourite. Its new console release gives more players the opportunity to experience one of the era’s most disturbing horror stories.

Stranded in space

Mouthwashing begins after a cargo ship collides with an asteroid, leaving its crew isolated in space with limited resources. Most of the crew survive the impact, but Curly is left close to death. His heavily wrapped body, with a single bloodshot eye visible through the bandages, becomes one of the game’s most memorable and uncomfortable images.

The setup draws on the claustrophobic tension of classic cabin-fever thrillers. As time passes and survival becomes less certain, the crew’s relationships deteriorate. The confined ship becomes a pressure cooker, recalling the trapped social dynamics of Vincenzo Natali’s 1997 film Cube, even though Mouthwashing does not fill its corridors with elaborate death traps.

Anya, a medic with the Pony Express, looks hopeless while bathed in the green light of sci-fi displays aboard a cargo ship.

Horror built from human behaviour

The game’s impact comes less from sudden scares than from sustained psychological discomfort. Across its compact runtime, it gradually exposes the damage already taking place aboard the ship before the crash. Learning more about the crew’s employer, the company’s negligence and the strained connections between crewmates makes the disaster feel increasingly inevitable.

That focus gives the science-fiction setting a grounded kind of terror. This is a story about damaged people confined together, carrying the consequences of exploitation, abuse and poor decisions into an environment with nowhere to escape. The result is an ugly, affecting experience that can linger long after its conclusion.

Where to play Mouthwashing

Mouthwashing is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X. It is also included with Xbox Game Pass from the console release date.

At around three hours, the game can be completed in one or two sittings, making it a strong choice for a concentrated horror session. Players should note that it deals with distressing subject matter and deserves careful attention to its content warnings.
