Mistfall Hunter reaches one million players despite harsh reviews
Mistfall Hunter has attracted more than one million players during its first week, an impressive opening for a fantasy extraction action-RPG entering an increasingly crowded genre. The milestone is especially notable because early player feedback has been overwhelmingly negative.

Bellring Games developed Mistfall Hunter, with Skystone Games publishing the title. It launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S on 30 July. Players become Gyldhunters, warriors revived by a mysterious woman named Dew and sent to collect Gyldenblood in an effort to repair the Web of Fate.
The bleak fantasy adventure supports solo scavenging and combat, as well as team-based play with friends. Players wanting a broader look at the title can visit the Mistfall Hunter game database.

A million-player launch on Game Pass
Mistfall Hunter quickly gained attention, reaching a Steam peak of 44,500 concurrent players. Its official account later celebrated the game surpassing one million players.
Availability through Game Pass, where players can access the game as part of the subscription service, likely contributed to that rapid reach. However, the size of the audience sits in sharp contrast with the game’s reception on Xbox and Steam.

Why are players unhappy?
Several issues appear to be behind the harsh response. Regional restrictions reportedly prevent some players from connecting with friends or other users outside their own region, reducing the flexibility of the multiplayer experience.
Server lag is another recurring complaint, particularly during player-versus-player matches. Some players have also reported being unable to move beyond the character-creation screen, while others have pointed to spambots in the chat.

Those problems affect different parts of the experience, from initial access and social play to competitive combat. Together, they can make it difficult for newcomers to enjoy the game even after successfully joining a session.

The roadmap looks beyond launch problems
Bellring Games has not yet acknowledged the complaints raised by players. The developer has instead outlined future seasonal content alongside its announcement of the one-million-player milestone.
The roadmap promises new seasonal tasks, weapons, monsters and events. It also offers a preview of a new theme planned for the second season.

That emphasis on future content leaves the game facing a familiar live-service challenge: attracting players is only the first step, while keeping them engaged may depend on resolving the issues affecting online play and progression.

Player numbers do not guarantee approval
Mistfall Hunter illustrates how quickly a title can build a substantial audience through a subscription service, even when its early reviews are deeply unfavourable. A high player count can show that a game is easy to try, but it does not necessarily indicate that the audience is satisfied.
For Australian gamers following the broader industry, the situation also highlights the difference between launch reach and lasting engagement. With extraction games competing for players’ time, the development team will need to retain those who arrived during the opening week. Seasonal tasks, weapons, monsters and events may provide reasons to return, but new content alone may not address the technical and connectivity concerns described by players.

What happens next?
The second season and the remaining roadmap updates will show whether Mistfall Hunter can convert early curiosity into a stable player base. Its opening week currently presents a clear contradiction: more than one million players and strong visibility, alongside serious concerns involving servers, regional access, onboarding and chat moderation.
That combination makes Mistfall Hunter an unusual early success in the current extraction-game market.
