Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on 27 October, with a native edition designed for Nintendo’s new hardware and a substantial visual upgrade.

Mojang has announced that the Switch 2 version will include the Vibrant Visuals graphics update by default. The upgrade brings improved lighting, volumetric fog, more convincing water reflections, directional lighting and deeper, more detailed shadows while retaining the familiar block-based art style.

The native release has been optimised specifically for Switch 2. Players who already own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch will not need to purchase the game from scratch, although the full details of the upgrade arrangement have not yet been revealed. Mojang says existing owners will have an upgrade path to the Switch 2 Edition, potentially through a discounted purchase or an eligible Minecraft subscription.

A major year for Minecraft

The Switch 2 launch arrives during an active period for the franchise. Vibrant Visuals initially appeared as part of the Chase the Skies update, representing one of the game’s most significant technical improvements since its original release.

Recent game drops have also added smaller creative features. New decorative furniture options, including cushions and beds, give players more ways to personalise houses and create detailed interiors without mods. This reflects Mojang’s recent approach of delivering smaller, more regular content updates rather than relying on one large annual release. The same update also inspired the addition of in-game whoopee cushions.

The Minecraft universe continues to grow

The wider franchise is expanding beyond the main sandbox game. At Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase in June, Mojang and Double Eleven revealed Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling action RPG. It is scheduled for release next year and will add new biomes, enemies and cooperative adventures while continuing the original game’s loot-focused design.

A second film, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is also in development and has a release date set for 2027.
