MidBoss, the studio and publisher behind 2064: Read Only Memories and its sequel, Read Only Memories: Neurodiver, has entered Chapter 7 bankruptcy proceedings.
A voluntary petition filed in June reports just $2,560 in assets and property against $823,272 owed to creditors. The listed liabilities include $138,980 across four loans, $64,000 in revenue share owed to one person, and $87,985 in royalty payments due to roughly a dozen people.
The filing also records $36,099 in credit-card debt, $7,000 owed to Chase Bank and a disputed equity claim from Tom Kaitchuck valued at $404,538.
Matt Conn listed as interim CEO
MidBoss founder Matt Conn is listed as the company’s interim CEO and has authorised the bankruptcy filing. The petition says the company owes Conn $70,922 from a shareholder loan, along with a further $13,748 in royalty share.
Conn helped establish MidBoss through GaymerX in 2013. The company announced in 2018 that he had stepped down after former employees accused him of abuse and sexual harassment.
Cade Petersen then became interim CEO. Although Petersen remained in the top role until 2025, Conn retained a 40 per cent ownership stake; Conn still owned 40 percent of the company.
Petersen appears to have left quietly in 2025. Alexander Mehrer followed him as CEO, with Conn describing his role last year as supporting Mehrer during a major restructuring. Mehrer’s professional profile says he revived the dormant studio, rebuilt important contracts and documentation, addressed ongoing risks, restored revenue channels and partnerships, and departed in August of last year. The bankruptcy filing indicates that Conn subsequently resumed control while retaining his 40 per cent stake.
Future of Read Only Memories remains uncertain
The Read Only Memories intellectual property and MidBoss’s Gaming in Color documentary are both listed among the company’s assets, but neither has been assigned a value in the filing.
That leaves the future of the science-fiction adventure series unclear. The 2024 sequel, Neurodiver, experienced repeated delays across four years and received mixed reviews after release.
MidBoss’s website also lists two projects in development: All AI Must Die and The Artificial Artist. Their current status has not been established.
