Metroid Ravenous introduces a version of Samus Aran who appears more openly furious than ever. The trailer keeps her face mostly hidden, offering brief glimpses of her eyes—sometimes lit by an unsettling glow—while her voice, movement and words all suggest a barely restrained anger.
That intensity sets Ravenous apart from Metroid Prime 4. Both games appear to operate on enormous, life-or-death stakes, but their emotional direction is very different. Prime 4 presents Samus as an explorer moving towards discovery, whereas Ravenous frames her as a threat inside a confined and dangerous situation.
The contrast is visible in the games’ key art. In Metroid Prime 4, Samus reaches out with a glowing purple arm in an image reminiscent of The Creation of Adam. In Ravenous, that same purple-lit arm is shown crushing a man’s head. The visual language leaves little doubt that this is a much more aggressive interpretation of the character.

A new side of Samus
Samus has traditionally worked as a silent protagonist. Her quiet determination has never made her less formidable, and the series has still communicated important parts of her character through her actions.
Across her adventures, she has shown commitment to her work, her friends and the people in her care. That includes vulnerable soldiers, the Chozo community that adopted her and even energy-stealing aliens. Those choices reveal what sort of person Samus is, but they have offered fewer clues about her private feelings.
Ravenous appears ready to change that by giving Samus a stronger spoken presence and a personality that extends beyond the familiar image of a stoic, dutiful soldier. Her line, “It’s eat or be eaten,” presents a Samus who is angry, hungry and prepared to consume anything standing in her way.
Why the change matters
This shift could make Ravenous feel more personal than a conventional mission of discovery. Instead of simply responding to danger, Samus seems to be carrying her own fury into the conflict—and directing it at anyone who believes they can control the situation.
For readers following the wider arcade and gaming news landscape, Metroid Ravenous is an intriguing reminder that established heroes can still be reinterpreted. Its trailer suggests that Samus is not losing her discipline; she is finally revealing how much emotion has been beneath it.
