A leaked trailer has revealed more about Mass Effect: Universe, the cancelled project BioWare was developing before EA shut the studio down. The game was reportedly being made by a much smaller team after BioWare’s January 2025 downsizing, leaving fans unlikely to revisit the series unless EA sells the intellectual property.

The footage runs for roughly two minutes, but it offers plenty of clues about the setting, protagonist, combat and story. Combined with BioWare’s earlier teasers, it gives us a clearer picture of the science-fiction role-playing game that will now likely remain unfinished.

Mass Effect: Universe Trailer footage circulated online alongside discussion from the Mass Effect community.

The trailer appeared to show an early concept version of the cancelled game rather than a finished release build.

1. An unfamiliar bar full of familiar species

The trailer opens outside a bar, with a huge skyscraper visible beyond it. The building does not clearly match a location previously seen in the series, although its style may recall London after the city’s post-war reconstruction. Inside, the clientele includes Salarians, Turians, Volus, Asari, Quarians, Krogan and what appear to be one or two Drell.

That mixture makes Earth seem like an unlikely location, although the planet could have become a destination for interstellar visitors after the Reaper War. Another possibility is that the bar sits somewhere entirely new. Earlier information suggested Universe would take place hundreds of years after the original trilogy.

2. A new lead instead of Shepard or Ryder

The leaked footage does not appear to feature Commander Shepard or Pathfinder Ryder. That fits the earlier hints pointing towards a story set well beyond the original trilogy and closer in spirit to a new chapter than a direct continuation of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Our new protagonist has a former Alliance military background. An Asari identifies him as someone who looks like military personnel, but he says he no longer serves. A flashback shows him and his squad fighting Krogan, potentially connecting to the Krogan civil-war storyline mentioned in a previous N7 Day teaser.

In the present day, he resembles a spacefaring espionage operative: confident, mobile and no longer interested in ordinary military duty.

3. The Mass Relay network is operating again

The protagonist has moved into a “new line of work”, but that job still takes him across the galaxy. The trailer shows him travelling through the Mass Relay network, despite the relays being destroyed at the end of Mass Effect 3.

The Extended Cut downloadable content established that the galaxy could eventually recover from the consequences of the finale. The repaired relays suggest that substantial time has passed since the trilogy’s conclusion. A useful refresher is available in the Mass Effect 3’s Extended Cut.

4. A smaller ship and an unfamiliar crew

The new vessel appears noticeably smaller than the Normandy from the original trilogy or the Tempest from Andromeda. Scenes inside show the protagonist speaking with human and Krogan companions while studying a map of the Milky Way.

The footage does not establish whether these characters would have been controllable party members or simply members of the ship’s crew. Either way, the ship looks designed for a more intimate team than the series’ previous large-scale exploration vessels.

5. Could this be Illium?

Although earlier teasers suggested that the Andromeda galaxy would matter to the plot, most of the leaked material appears to remain in the Milky Way. One location strongly resembles Illium, the Asari-dominated world visited repeatedly in Mass Effect 2.

The resemblance is not confirmation, but the combination of Asari architecture and the planet’s apparent urban setting makes Illium one of the trailer’s most recognisable possibilities.

6. Espionage over traditional battlefield action

Universe seems to have leaned further into spy-thriller territory than its predecessors. The protagonist wears a long coat, observes arrivals on a possible Illium, engages enemies at close range and uses both biotic powers and technology-based abilities.

One sequence shows him scanning a Salarian’s head, seemingly extracting or accessing information. The action includes hand-to-hand combat as well as more conventional firefights, suggesting a story built around infiltration and personal investigations rather than only military campaigns.

7. Romance was still part of the formula

Romance and sexual relationships have been recurring elements throughout the series, and the leaked project appears to have continued that tradition. The protagonist is shown with a woman who may have been a romance option.

In one scene they enter an event together arm-in-arm; another shows them in an intimate bedroom encounter. The trailer does not identify the character or reveal how the relationship would have developed.

8. A mysterious creature in stasis

A party consisting of the protagonist, a Krogan and a Quarian discovers a strange creature with a roughly squid-like form. Its appearance may invite comparisons with the Reapers or the Leviathans, although the creature also seems to have skin with human-like qualities.

It is being held in stasis and appears to be critically ill. The Quarian scans it, but the visible information is too limited to explain what the creature is or how it connects to the wider story.

9. Liara returns for a bar fight

The trailer closes by returning to the opening bar. An Asari whispers a threat to the protagonist, while several associates prepare to attack him. Another patron then intervenes: Liara T’Soni, the only returning character previously confirmed by the project’s earlier teasers.

A fight erupts. The new protagonist battles several attackers at close quarters, while Liara uses biotics to throw opponents across the room. The sequence ends with the title card for Mass Effect: Universe.

An intriguing glimpse of a cancelled future

The footage appears uneven, with some sequences looking considerably less polished than others. It still establishes a compelling direction: a later-era Milky Way, a new lead with military experience, espionage-focused missions, repaired relays, a smaller crew and a possible connection to both Illium and Andromeda.

It remains unclear how the Andromeda galaxy would have fitted into the plot. A 2023 teaser suggested that someone from the Milky Way would answer a distress call from Andromeda, while this trailer concentrates mostly on familiar galactic territory. With BioWare shut down, more information may only emerge through further leaks or comments from former developers. The project’s future would depend on EA selling or otherwise reviving the Mass Effect property.
