Insomniac says it is listening

James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of communications and marketing, posted on X shortly before launch that the studio had been listening closely to feedback in recent days. He said the team was working hard on a response and used a joke about a smell coming from the studio’s kitchen.

That wording appears to point towards one of the most criticised design elements: Wolverine’s scent trails. Stevenson’s comments confirm that updates are being planned, although they do not provide a release schedule or a detailed list of fixes.

Why the scent trails became controversial

During the campaign, Wolverine can see brightly coloured trails that guide him towards objects or indicate the intended route through a level. The system suits a linear adventure, but many reviews argued that it makes the game feel overly restricted, as though it is constantly steering players away from exploring beyond the planned path.

The criticism is especially notable because Insomniac’s Spider-Man games are associated with open-world freedom. The scent trails became the clearest symbol of complaints about excessive guidance, even though many people discussing them had not yet played the game at launch.

Updates may not solve every problem

Removing or changing the trails could address a visible source of frustration, but software updates may not fix the broader issues raised by reviews. The game’s combat was described as functional in moment-to-moment play, yet its constant emphasis on fluid, spectacular violence was seen as conflicting with the story’s emotional goals.

That tension affects Logan’s characterisation: if the player is rarely encouraged to slow down or hold back, the story’s attempt to present restraint becomes harder to believe. It remains unclear whether post-launch changes can address that deeper relationship between combat and narrative.
