Marvel’s Wolverine takes a deliberately direct route through superhero action. Instead of another sprawling open-world adventure, Insomniac delivers a linear, cinematic campaign closer in structure to Uncharted or the original God of War trilogy. That restraint is welcome in 2026, although the streamlined design also leaves much of the game feeling mechanically narrow.

Marvel’s Wolverine is strongest when it engages with the ideas traditionally associated with the X-Men, even though it is not really an X-Men team game. There is no Xavier Institute, and Magneto is not meaningfully part of the story. Instead, Logan belongs to Team X, alongside Mystique, Sabretooth and the telepath Nathaniel Essex.

Logan has spent years fighting for mutantkind, but he has been separated from Team X long enough for old resentments to harden. The opening mission asks him to rescue Essex from Bolivar Trask, a scientist and engineer hostile to mutants. That assignment soon expands into an international conspiracy involving the capture and forced removal of mutants.

The game’s political material remains one of its most effective elements. Mutants are hunted, detained and transported in vans, while Trask and other extremists describe a population representing less than one per cent of humanity as an existential danger. The story’s imagery of children treated as prisoners and minorities targeted through official systems reflects the enduring relevance of the X-Men’s themes.

Those themes have always drawn on real-world histories of prejudice, including the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement. Magneto’s origins have also prompted debate about how a Holocaust survivor fits into increasingly modern versions of the setting; some argue it becomes increasingly tough to buy into a character who lived through the Holocaust while still operating in a contemporary world. Whatever the answer to that continuity question, the persecution of mutants remains sadly easy to understand.

The narrative becomes more compelling as it explores how different mutants experience exclusion. Mystique hides behind other identities because her blue appearance makes public life dangerous. Leech can suppress another mutant’s powers simply by being nearby. Walter Langkowski, a Team X scientist and doctor, is treated as lesser because his X-gene has not activated.

These individual stories add welcome texture to the wider conflict. Unfortunately, the game repeatedly leaves that richer material to concentrate on Logan’s personal trauma. Several plotlines are connected, but the campaign sometimes feels as though it is laying foundations for multiple sequels rather than trusting the central mutant story to carry the experience.

Liam McIntyre’s Logan is quieter and more compassionate than many interpretations of Wolverine. He shows particular patience towards children such as Leech, while the character’s familiar fury is suppressed by a mental block. The campaign gradually reveals that something from Logan’s extremely long life has been locked away in his mind.

Optional obstacle courses and battles against waves of Nightmare enemies help unlock those memories. Jean Grey’s arrival further disturbs Logan’s carefully sealed trauma. Their relationship is complicated, but not in the usual way created by Scott Summers. Without revealing major plot details, the game presents their connection as an intensely melodramatic romance built from duty, pain and a bond neither character fully understands.

That dynamic will divide players. The relationship is deliberately tragic, tense and emotionally entangled, yet largely avoids physical intimacy. Jean is often positioned as the person who must carry Logan’s suffering, and the chemistry can feel asserted rather than developed. Even so, the story’s unapologetically angsty approach will work for players who enjoy star-crossed romance and heightened comic-book drama.

Combat is satisfying, but rarely deep

Wolverine’s claws make the moment-to-moment action immediately readable. Logan can absorb enormous punishment, cut through enemies and parry attacks as armed soldiers and Sentinel units close in. When the rhythm clicks, moving across an arena and chaining strikes feels fast, physical and surprisingly absorbing.

The Nightmare Door challenges reinforce that appeal. Some ask Logan to complete obstacle courses, while others throw more than 25 enemy waves at him as he works towards another recovered memory. The combat is not especially complex, but its timing and impact can create a pleasing flow state.

There is less room for personal expression in the upgrade system. Abilities arrive in a largely fixed order, meaning players receive much the same toolkit at similar points in the campaign. Enemy groups also tend to share vulnerabilities and behaviours, so new moves rarely demand a major change in strategy.

Building the Rage meter allows Logan to enter a devastating state and perform brutal one-hit takedowns. Leaping from one target to another and impaling opponents can be thrilling, but the basic solution remains consistent: close the distance, use the claws and keep moving. Once the spectacle fades, there is not much mechanical variety underneath it.

A linear structure with limited detours

Outside combat, Logan’s heightened sense of smell is used to track objectives, while his damaged clothing records the violence of each encounter. The story introduces many major threads, but those ideas seldom lead to distinctly different gameplay.

The campaign moves through compact areas rather than an open world. Exploration generally means running, jumping and fighting through action-platforming spaces, with puzzles that are rarely demanding. A few set pieces, including a motorcycle battle, provide welcome changes of pace.

Insomniac’s familiar walk-and-talk sequences offer calmer interludes. Players can move through detailed locations, speak with allies, inspect environmental objects and discover collectible whisky bottles accompanied by stories from Logan’s past. These scenes help establish character, even when the surrounding mission design is simple.

One of the more memorable sections sends Logan and Jean undercover at a party while psychic powers disguise their identities. The brief sequence has a Bond-like flavour and lets the pair investigate their surroundings without immediately resorting to violence. It also hints at a more varied game that might have offered more stealth, social deception and problem-solving alongside the constant fighting.

Marvel’s Wolverine verdict

  • Developer: Insomniac
  • Genre: Cinematic action game
  • Platform: PS5
  • Release date: 15 September 2026
  • Play time: Approximately 18 hours, with the campaign estimated at 15–18 hours
  • Best features: Mutant persecution storyline, strong performances and enjoyable close-quarters combat
  • Weakest features: Repetitive encounters, limited player expression and an overextended collection of story threads

Insomniac wisely avoids another huge superhero sandbox, giving the campaign a polished, controlled structure instead. That decision helps the game’s production values and keeps its repetitive combat from becoming completely exhausting. A longer adventure filled with city activities and side quests would likely have exposed its narrow design even more quickly.

The shorter runtime also gives the campaign a modest advantage. At roughly 15 to 18 hours, its single-minded combat loop is easier to tolerate than it would be across a much larger world. Occasional ideas, such as fighting while Logan’s eyesight is impaired and slowly returning, show how additional mechanics might have improved the overall rhythm.

Marvel’s Wolverine is therefore an uneven but focused action game. Its mutant-rights themes and character drama are more ambitious than its combat systems, while its claws provide enough immediate satisfaction to carry the campaign. It feels like a throwback to a time when a game could tell one contained story without demanding every spare hour. Whether that simplicity remains appealing will depend on how much variety players expect from Logan’s next outing.
