Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on 15 September. Recent preview sessions have revealed more about Logan’s story, combat, exploration and the characters surrounding him.
1. Wolverine is the only playable character
Unlike Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, which occasionally shifted away from web-swinging into less popular stealth sections starring Mary Jane, Marvel’s Wolverine keeps the focus on Logan. Insomniac has confirmed that Wolverine is the game’s sole playable character.
GamesRadar+ has more detail on the decision.
2. The story takes place before the X-Men form
The game includes familiar figures such as Jean Grey, Mystique and Sabretooth, but its story is set before the X-Men become an established team. That means players should not expect the central conflict to revolve around Charles Xavier, Magneto or Cyclops in their familiar X-Men roles.
This is not an origin story for Logan. He already has important relationships and becomes part of Team X, a group created by Nathaniel Essex, the character who is better known to Marvel fans as Mister Sinister.
3. Nathaniel Essex may be hiding a villainous turn
Essex, portrayed by Troy Baker, initially appears to be an ally. He forms Team X with Logan, Mystique and Sabretooth, but his comic-book history makes his loyalty difficult to trust. Insomniac has not confirmed whether he will remain on Logan’s side.
Because Essex is known as Mister Sinister, his potential betrayal is one of the story’s obvious mysteries. Preview coverage suggests that, if the turn happens, it may be held back until late in the campaign rather than revealed immediately.
GamesRadar+’s preview discusses the possibility of a delayed heel turn.
4. The combat is brutal and satisfying, but may lack variety
Logan’s adamantium claws, immense strength and healing factor give combat a distinct physical impact. He can absorb punishment and cut through enemies in a way that suits the character, with rage playing an important role in his fighting style.
However, early impressions indicate that the system may feel more repetitive than the combat in Spider-Man. Spider-Man’s webs, mobility and environmental options allowed players to approach encounters in many different ways, while Wolverine’s core loop currently appears to centre more heavily on attacking, parrying and tearing through opponents.
A skill tree is expected to expand Logan’s abilities, although it remains unclear how much extra experimentation and player expression it will provide. IGN’s final preview offers further context on the combat concerns.
5. It is not an open-world game, but exploration still matters
Marvel’s Wolverine is not built as an open-world adventure. Even so, previews have shown quieter sections where Logan can move through a town, speak with mutant companions and spend time in the environment between major fights.
One highlighted location is Lowtown, a refuge where mutants gather. During this slower sequence, players can talk with other mutants, challenge Sabretooth to arm wrestling, play Never Have I Ever with Mystique and discover Easter eggs. These moments provide a break from combat while developing the world and its characters.

6. Other X-Men characters were considered, then removed
Insomniac explored including more X-Men characters during development, but some were cut because they did not support the central story. The team chose to place the game before the X-Men existed so Logan would not be overshadowed by a large cast of equally prominent personalities.
The development approach began with familiar Wolverine locations and characters, then shaped them around Logan’s personal arc. Characters were retained when they helped him confront or understand his past, while others were removed when they distracted from that narrative.
This focused cast is intended to ensure that the game remains a Wolverine story first, rather than becoming an ensemble adventure dominated by the wider Marvel universe. VGC’s developer interview explains that creative priority.
7. Nightmare Doors reveal Logan’s memories
Logan’s painful history is explored through optional Nightmare Doors. These challenges combine timed combat and platforming, with story and lore rewards waiting at the end.
The doors represent a physical expression of Wolverine’s fractured memories and troubled mind. Completing them gives players an optional way to uncover parts of his past beyond the main storyline and its cinematic reveals.
What the previews suggest
The early picture is of a focused, character-driven action game built around one playable hero. Its strongest ideas appear to be the physicality of Wolverine’s combat, the contrast between violent encounters and quieter mutant communities, and the gradual discovery of Logan’s history.
Questions remain around combat variety, the role of the skill tree and Nathaniel Essex’s eventual allegiance. Those answers will arrive when Marvel’s Wolverine launches on PlayStation 5 on 15 September.
