Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls brings tag-team combat to Marvel

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a new 2D tag-team fighting game from the developers associated with Guilty Gear and Double Dragon. It places Marvel characters in a fast, team-based combat system built around assists, character swaps and dramatic arena transitions.

The game arrives during a particularly busy period for Marvel, with Marvel’s Wolverine scheduled for September 15. Before that release, players can step into a fighting-game interpretation of the Marvel universe.

How Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls works

Matches begin with one active fighter and an assist character. Additional characters can be unlocked by meeting specific conditions. The full system supports four-versus-four battles, allowing players to call in assists for special attacks and rotate members of their team into active combat.

One notable difference from many tag-team fighters is the shared health system. Rather than giving every character an individual health bar, the whole team uses one pool. That pool grows as more characters are added to the team.

Launch modes and team design

Marvel Tōkon is planned to include several ways to play:

• Startup Battle: a mode intended to teach the fundamentals.
• Battle Arcadia: a more party-focused experience.
• Episode Mode: a story mode presented through motion comics, with each comic created by a different artist.

The launch roster is arranged across five teams of four characters, giving the base game 20 playable characters. Each fighter has an Ease of Use rating, with more stars indicating a gentler learning curve for newcomers.

Ms. Marvel and Wolverine receive high Ease of Use ratings. Storm is more demanding, partly because her Tempest mechanic lets players alter the direction of her projectiles while fighting.

Season one DLC includes Phoenix Cyclops

Four downloadable characters are planned for the first season beyond the 20-character launch roster. The first announced addition is Phoenix Cyclops, an evil, possessed version of the well-known X-Man. The character was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls held an open beta the previous weekend. Its visual presentation drew praise for combining anime-inspired styling with comic-book artwork, while technical problems affected the PC version and weakened some early impressions.
