Marvel Rivals upgrades Storm’s summer skin after fan backlash

NetEase Games has changed the status of Storm’s new summer costume in Marvel Rivals after players questioned why it was ranked below two other beach-themed releases.

Storm’s skin was the odd one out

The seasonal collection features beach outfits for Storm, Magik and Scarlet Witch. In the game’s cosmetic system, skins are classified as Rare, Epic or Legendary. Higher categories cost more and include additional presentation features.

Magik and Scarlet Witch’s summer costumes were announced as Legendary items, while Storm’s Sacred Skies outfit was initially labelled Epic. That decision quickly became a talking point among the community.

Players also pointed to the characters’ existing cosmetic rosters. Storm had only one Legendary skin, compared with six for Magik and five for Scarlet Witch. She was also the only female character in the game to receive a summer skin that was not Legendary tier.

With no immediate explanation for the different classification, some fans interpreted the decision as another example of Storm receiving less attention than her peers. The reaction to the initial announcement post was substantial.

NetEase changes the plan within hours

About 12 hours after the announcement, NetEase responded to the criticism in a lengthy post on the Marvel Rivals X account. The developer acknowledged the feedback and outlined several changes to Storm’s costume.

  • Sacred Skies will be upgraded from Epic to Legendary at no extra cost.
  • The outfit will receive a new lobby animation.
  • Its MVP animation will be updated.
  • The skin will retain its $16 price.
  • An ultimate-effect upgrade will add revised visual effects to Storm’s ultimate ability.

NetEase also said Storm will receive more Legendary costumes in the near future, although no release dates have been announced.

Why cosmetic tiers matter in live-service games

The reversal highlights how strongly players scrutinise cosmetic rarity in a live-service game. A tier affects both the expected feature set and the price, so assigning comparable character releases to different categories can become a larger issue than the outfits themselves.

For Australian players following ongoing game updates, this is a useful reminder that live-service content can change quickly after community feedback. You can find more gaming news in the RETROCADE Arcade Blog, or explore arcade videos for more gaming coverage.
