Marvel Studios has reversed its decision to continue Wonder Man. Just four months after Disney confirmed a second season, the Disney Plus series has reportedly been cancelled, leaving the first season’s cliffhanger unresolved.
Variety reports that Marvel never assembled a writers’ room for season 2. The writers have instead moved to other projects. The cancellation is particularly notable because the renewal announcement appeared to show finished scripts for the central characters, Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery.
Series creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest were expected to return, alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Williams and Ben Kingsley as Slattery, the disgraced actor and former Mandarin. Kingsley has played Slattery in several Marvel productions. The two characters could still return in other Marvel projects.
Wonder Man was an unusual Marvel Television renewal. Earlier one-season productions included The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Ms. Marvel. Only a small number of live-action Marvel Television series, including Loki and Daredevil: Born Again, have continued across multiple seasons.
Released under Marvel’s “less homework, more personal stories” Marvel Spotlight banner, Wonder Man was designed as a more self-contained story while still setting up possible futures for Williams and Slattery.
Cretton remains attached to several major projects. Alongside this week’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he is developing a live-action adaptation of the Naruto manga and anime for Lionsgate. His possible involvement in future Tom Holland Spider-Man films remains unclear, as does the status of Shang-Chi 2. However, Cretton told Screen Rant that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently in active development.
What was Wonder Man about?
Wonder Man premiered on Disney Plus in January as an eight-episode series about Los Angeles actor Simon Williams. Williams is a struggling day player who overanalyses the minor roles he lands, while secretly possessing superpowers.
He forms an unlikely friendship with Trevor Slattery, a washed-up actor and former “terrorist”. Together, they pursue their dream roles in a film called Wonder Man. The series combined comedy with restrained superhero action and focused on the pressures of performance, ambition and reinvention.
The first season’s ending leaves several story threads open, including the future of its two leading characters. A related discussion also examined the unanswered questions surrounding the finale, including the smaller mystery of Josh Gad’s absence.
Marvel Television’s next release
Marvel Television’s next major project is VisionQuest, the concluding chapter in the storyline that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along. The series is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in October.
