Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has received its major version 4.0 update, adding several Nintendo Switch 2 features more than a year after the console launched. The timing is surprising for one of the best-selling games ever made.

The game has sold 71 million copies, excluding the original Wii U release, and remains widely played. Nintendo has delivered the Switch 2 upgrade as a free update rather than a separate Switch 2 Edition, apparently avoiding a more direct sales clash with Mario Kart World. That overlap exists regardless, with players returning to the older game after the update.

What version 4.0 adds

Nintendo could have limited the update to higher resolution and shorter loading times. Instead, it has used the newer hardware for a much more ambitious feature set:

• Eight-player split-screen racing
• Camera Play support through GameChat
• A 96-race endurance mode

Those additions have put Mario Kart 8 Deluxe back in the conversation and encouraged some players to choose it over Mario Kart World. From a purely commercial perspective, that may appear counterproductive, but the update also keeps a proven seller active on Nintendo’s current hardware.

There is a simpler explanation, too: Nintendo had the technical ability to make the unusual modes work, and decided they would be enjoyable. The eight-player split-screen option feels like the kind of ambitious experiment that became too entertaining to leave on the cutting-room floor.

That willingness to surprise players is central to Nintendo’s appeal. It also gives the number in Mario Kart 8 an amusing extra meaning: the game’s continued expansion makes the title’s association with infinity feel increasingly appropriate.

What does this mean for Mario Kart World?

There is a practical reason to keep investing in an older title. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still sells hundreds of thousands of copies each quarter, despite being nine years old. Keeping those players engaged benefits Nintendo whether they are playing the older release or the newer game.

Even so, the contrast is awkward. Mario Kart World has not received an update as substantial as version 4.0, while the ongoing stream of additions that helped Mario Kart 8 Deluxe thrive has largely been missing. Nintendo’s approach to the modern era of patches remains cautious, especially with the game that seems best positioned to benefit from continued support.

It remains unclear whether a major Mario Kart World update is planned, or whether Nintendo regards it as a stepping stone towards a full sequel. For now, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the leading entry in the series, and version 4.0 has strengthened its position.
