Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has received its major Switch 2 upgrade, and its headline addition is a surprisingly chaotic eight-player split-screen mode. The free update gives Nintendo’s best-selling original Switch game a compelling reason to return to the spotlight.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe version 4.0.0 is available as a free download on Switch 2. The update introduces several enhancements designed for the newer console’s more powerful hardware, arriving more than a year after the system launched.
Eight racers on one screen
The biggest change is the expansion of local multiplayer from four players to eight. Keeping eight racers visible at once is a substantial technical step up from the existing four-player split-screen experience, especially during busy races. The mode also raises the question of how practical eight-player racing will be in handheld mode, where the individual views could become difficult to follow.

Sharper racing and small gameplay changes
Beyond the new local multiplayer option, the Switch 2 update delivers crisper visuals and shorter loading times before races. Online players with a compatible webcam can also use CameraPlay, adding camera support to online competition.
Nintendo has made a few smaller adjustments to the base game as well. The Boo item animation no longer slows racers down, while player speed during races has been increased “by the equivalent of one coin”.

The upgrade strengthens Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s case as the standout entry in the series, even after the release of Mario Kart World last year. The newer game offers expansive courses built around Switch 2 hardware and more involved racing mechanics, but it has so far felt lighter on content than its predecessor.
Players have been waiting for a substantial downloadable-content push for Mario Kart World, but that has not arrived yet.
